Australian Jurassic Fossil Fish Sandblasted in Fused Glass

Just as it takes eons for nature to create a fossilized fish, this sandblasted, twice-fused piece of glass art took painstaking care and time. The first step Wendy took was to fuse multi-colored pieces of Bullseye fusible glass in a terra cotta pot to form a nearly perfect, 12" circle. Next, she fused pieces of dichroic glass and wire spirals to the cirle. Inspired by the dark, swirling colors of the circle, Wendy searched for the perfect fossil images, finding Australian Jurassic Fossil Fish Leptolepis talbragarensis. She drew the two circling images on paper then cut out the images on Contact paper for the sandblasting step. The final stage was to remove the paper and reveal the image.

This is truly a one-of-kind piece of art that can be displayed easily on a stand or mounted on the wall (ask for mounting info). Signed and dated by Wendy Clark for authenticity.

For you fossil fanatics, here's the lowdown on the Leptolepis: "This fossil fish comes the most famous mass kill site in Australia, the Talbragar Fish Beds. Like the much younger Green River Formation deposits, large numbers of specimens that evidently died contemporaneously have been found. The preservation in ironstone is remarkable. The genus Leptolepis already shows all the characteristics of the true bony fishes, and may represent the early stages of the developmental route towards herrings of Order Clupeiformes, the Order to which the Green River Formation genus Knightia belongs. Leptolepiformes is an extinct order of small, ray-finned teleost fishes characterized by a relatively strong, ossified axial skeleton, thin cycloid scales, and a preopercle with an elongated dorsal portion, and which are to the understanding of the early evolution of the Teleostei."
