Porthole Vessels

Porthole Vessels

(LisaRippee)
Similar to my Secret Stash vessels, these windows create more of a porthole type appearance.

I let the glass form it's natural elliptical shape, which was created by the imbalance of glass. It has one handle and is designed to show the front and the bottom windows.

When you look directly through the two side windows, you see a small pinpoint of light in the center of the lens. It's very cool. (I couldn't capture it with the camera, so you'll just have to believe me.)

This piece was designed to be a working palatte for ideas then turned into a wonderful vase/candle holder. Enchanting in it's lack of geometric design. Most everything of mine is well measured out with the exception of this piece. Please visit my gallery. (Sold)

This was my first real experiment with using only the hand rag (wet newspaper). This is a form that I keep playing with, and am starting to have better results.

This is a clear vessel which I dipped in prima vera. It stands 13 1/2", and is 5" wide. This is an area of glass that I keep exploring, and am eager to find out more.

This is a technique I thought up and tryed a few times. The top is not bitwork, but sguareish tube cut, heated and picked up off a plate. I guess it is hollow murrhini. Then incombo'ed with the bottom blow piece. Please leave a comment if you have seen something like this or know of anyone doing it.

This lizard appears to be changing color to match the vase he is climbing up. I enjoy trying to capture the natural world in glass more than anything else. The goal is to convey a message through the body language of an animal. Once I can do that, I think I will have found my way to expressing my own feelings in what I make.

Thank you for looking.

Made this Small Wiskey Jug in Jan. of '06. The colors I used in the stem were Purple Luster, Silver Strike 5, and Blue moon. The top is coil potted with Amber Purple and the bottom is heavily fumed with silver, feel free to give me some constructive criticism.

Phil and Veda are both self-taught artists who were drawn to the medium of glass for artistic expression at a young age. The parents of two lovely daughters, Phil and Veda met in California where they were separately exploring and studying craft, Phil specializing in glassblowing. This shared passion for art and craft has fused both their personal and artistic union and sustains the Bickley family. They work independently, but also encourage each others unique voice and vision in collaborative projects. Veda's glass takes on whimsical, fluid and sensual lines while Phil's work is always confident and rich in sophisticated expression. Having worked and supported themselves as artists for more than six years, their ability to live a life fostered by their art resonates in their pieces.
Their home in the graceful rusticity of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains is also their artist's studio, so creativity is deeply etched in their everyday life.
