It only took the judge one time to say "10,000 or six months community service." and I learned my lesson. Now my acts of rebellion go on a gallery wall, oh well...

Abstract Art Sculpture

Here are a few pieces of art to come out of my own shop. Some are free standing sculpture, others have wall hanging gear. All have brilliant colors both hot and cold, base will usually be black plexiglass.

Venusian Swamp Lotus

Venusian Swamp Lotus

(EricEhlenberger)
The "Venusian Swamp Lotus" series is one of many series of works in which Ehlenberger explores a fantasy world of Venusian flora and fauna.

The Swamp Lotus Series is characterized by an open blown-glass form with a single hand-blown neon element emerging from the center.

Like his other Venusian Flora, it can be mounted in a variety of wood or aluminum bases designed for single or multiple Flora. They may also be incorporated into small or large scale "Venusian Garden" installations.

Venusian Clamora

Venusian Clamora

(EricEhlenberger)
The "Venusian Clamora" series is one of many series of works in which Ehlenberger explores a fantasy world of Venusian flora and fauna.

The Venusian Clamora Series is characterized by a clam-like blown-glass form with a complex, bifurcated hand-blown neon element emerging from the center.

Like his other Venusian Flora, it can be mounted in a variety of wood or aluminum bases designed for single or multiple Flora. They may also be incorporated into small or large scale "Venusian Garden" installations.

Venusian Gardens

Venusian Gardens

(EricEhlenberger)
Ehlenberger's interpretation of his "Venusian World" comes together in a variety of "Venusian Gardens," including small, self-contained free-standing "Venusian Gardens" as well as small and large installations.

This garden concept is continuously expanding into new and different realms with different components and different applications from small, home gardens to large scale aquarium settings and theatre stage set installations.

At this time, there are three basic types of Venusian Garden sculptures: Marsh, Swamp and Rock Gardens. The Marsh Gardens are characterized by aluminum bases, the Swamp Gardens have bases incorporating glass underlit with neon and the Rock Gardens incorporate black stone.

Each "Venusian Garden" sculpture or installation is made up of interchangeable components from a variety of Venusian Flora including Swamp Flowers, Swamp Lotus, Clamora and others.

Amber Blanding- NEON

Amber Blanding- NEON

(AmberWavesOfGlass)
I graduated from Alfred University in 2002 majoring in Glass/Neon. Soon after I hooked up with Neon Glassworks in my hometown of Syracuse NY, where I worked with Ted Kunzi, who's been bending for 17yrs. and is truely one of a kind. He and his wife, Wendy, had started lighting up the city with their one of a kind signs. We put up window signs, outdoor signs, theatre marquis to NYC style 40 ft. rooftop exposed neon signs.

Harald Eberhart Plasma Neon/Argon Gallery

Harald Eberhart Plasma Neon/Argon Gallery

(EBERHARTGLASSBLOWING)
Thanks to the FLOW magazine Vol. 3 Issue 2 I have received a lot more interest in my NO electrode plasma sculpture workshops.

Don Beck, Prof. of the Lampworking Dept. at the Univ. of Arlington, TX, recently attended my 3-D Plasma Workshop and I know with his talent among other GLOWWORM artists anything is possible.

Tony Greer, who has all the expensive evacuation pumps and neon toys is using electrodes very effectively in his fantastic plasma art.

I introduce my students to the NO ELECTRODE radio frequency technique because it is not so high-tech and costs are lower to get started.

I am posting my pyrex Neon/Argon frequency plasma sculptures on this site to become part of the growing record and hopefully some students
will be interested in my workshops that I schedule whenever two persons are interested.

It is my hope that this site will identify the new plasma artists of this generation.

Day Effect - The Ortigas Horse

Day Effect - The Ortigas Horse

(BertRobertoSaenzD...)
Late in 2001, we received a commission from Ortigas and Company, the owners of the Ortigas Center in San Juan, Metro Manila, to sculpt a huge (16.5 feet tall by 34 feet long by 4.5 feet wide HORSE, in NEON) The commercial section of the Center is the Greenhills Shopping Center Complex (a 25 hectare shopping mall area). To celebrate the coming of the Year of the Horse in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, Ortigas's President, Attorney Rafael Ortigas, decided to pay tribute to the Chinese community by commissioning the work.
Since we obviously could not execute the work solely of neon tubes, we had to fabricate a metal base, which used 2" welded nesh, 2" flat bars, and sheet metal, to mount the neon standoff insulators. The sculpture was then painted in White (mane and tail) and Gold (the rest of the body) to present a pleasing aesthetic "Day Effect" The neon 15KV transformers were incorporated into the frame, and received the same paint treatment. The neon treatment was originally supposed to be a basic silhouette (the pattern we showed them was a 2 dinensional sculpture mounted on a 2X3 foot painting frame with a black felt background) double sided, so it could be viewed from either side of their huge main sign for the complex.
When we completed the figure, we found that due to its length, the head and tail of the horse lifted while the rest of the body stayed on the ground. it was like lifting a fish by raising the head and tail sections. That was how we DISCOVERED the secret of the 3 Dimensional Neon Sculpture, that we had never seen in any of the available neon books. To stiffen our structure, we layered (on both sides) two more layers of welded mesh from the basic 2" apart double layer of welded mesh. The first layer at 1ft and the second layer at around 10in from the second layer. We shaped the stiffening layers like muscles, and after cross bracing them every 2-4 in apart at a 45 deg angle, they REALLY gave the impression of being muscles.
We then (after tracing the basic figure in silhouette)continued to trace the muscle patterns with additional neon tubes, lifting them almost 2ft total from the base figure. As the figure was see-through you could then see a total of 5 tubes layered on either side of the figure.
due to the brillance of the light the effect was literally NEON MAGIC! It looked like there was this Magical Horse in gold and white tubes, taking a walk under the Main Greenhills Shopping Center sign.
We offer as our first image the "Day Effect" of this sculpture. Observe the muscle effect of the layering, the transformers built into the frame, and most of all...note that even in this midday shot, YOU CANNOT SEE HOW THE SCULPTURE HANGS FROM THE BASE OF THE MAIN SIGN! As an afficionado of magic, we decided to illustrate that indeed, NEON is a MAGICAL MEDIUM!
We see this as our contribution to all our colleagues involved in NEON, be they using neon as a medium for commercial applications as well as a medium for artistic expression.
If there is anyone who feels we could be of assistance to them in any way regarding how we managed to come up with this NEW TECHNIQUE,kindly feel free to contact us and we would be happy to share ALL our knowledge and experience with you. I turned 60 this year and have no one to pass my knowledge and experiences to, as my son, Inaki, does not seem inclined to follow in my footsteps.
Although I have never seen a single piece of Neon work from the Philippines included in any of the books on neon published, just want you all to know, that Neon is ALIVE and WELL, in the Republic of the Philippines.

The Monkey- 2004- Year of the Monkey

The Monkey- 2004- Year of the Monkey

(BertRobertoSaenzD...)
In 2004, we were again commissioned by Attorney Rafael Ortigas, President of Ortigas and Company to execute a sculpture (this time of a Monkey) for their Greenhills Shopping Center Complex.
This third sculpture we executed for them was also sheath in fiberglass, but since we wanted the glass mat to look like pelt, rather than wool, we sprayed a thick layer of polyester resin to lay the strands down a bit. Unlike the Ram (that was fine with the white fiberglass, as it looked like fleece) We needed to color the pelt in Gold. We sprayed a top coat of Aztec Gold dye(used in casting polyester stained glass work)incorporated into polyester resin, to give the figure a nice Golden Monkey "day effect".

Influenced by Kandinsky's and Miro's work early in his education, the artist reflects on the relationship of color and form as reduced to basic geometric forms. Through the use of simple arcs interacting with geometric shapes, the artist creates a dynamic tension between the action suggested by the arcs and the stability represented in the geometric forms. This dynamic tension is further enhanced with the use of luminous color, establishing a precarious balance of the elements in the sculptures.

Clouds Series

(EricEhlenberger)
Ehlenberger's love of cumulus clouds comes out in this series of wall sculptures. The Clouds sculptures are made up of multiple distinct layers each providing a sense of movement and interaction with one another. The background is brushed aluminum and the foreground pieces are aluminum painted in translucent white with neon units sandwiched between, casting their distinctive glows of luminous color. aluminum, glass lenses and neon 72" x 48" x 6"
