So you want to open a glass factory...

I spent the summer months of 1999 on the Island of Cebu in the Philippines as a consultant and an instructor for a large decorative arts factory. We spent long hours, as the staff and I tested and configured large gas powered kilns and began to manufacture a production line. I taught them the basic glass techniques and skills required to safely run kiln fired glass factory. What we lacked in facilities and equipment, we made up for in the talent and resorcefullness of the factory staff. I am proud to have worked for them, and some of our pictures are listed on this page.
If anyone is interested in doing something like this again, I enjoy a real “challenge”…
Warm Regards,
Andrew Brott

I have always been interested in glass ever since I met Paul Marioni, a glass artist that came to South Australia in the early eighty's. I was working in sculpture at the time when Ausglass brought him over from Seattle to show us how to work with hot and warm glass.

My experience was enhanced when we found ourselves in an old cast iron factory that had areas for sand casting, we made up several temporary steel framed kilns and also set up a 44gallon drum to do work from a crucible using a vacuum cleaner to blow the air into this drum firing up the gas to heat our works of art.
It was the most amazing time as Paul gave me the wings to fly, with his slide shows of Nasa's photographs of the planets and pics of people's work from all around the world, has stayed with me until today.

I was fascinated that compatible glass was used long before our civilization could work out how to put two colours together and I have a document talking about glass made 3,000 years ago!

The Glass Tapestry of David Alcala
by Gil Reynolds

It’s not easy to turn the tables on established art techniques, but sometimes 90 degrees can make a big difference. Consider the work of David Alcala. Instead of working his designs flat on a table, he turns his art work 90 degree up on its edge to create some of the most unique landscapes ever made with fused glass. Believe it or not most of what one is viewing are horizontal layers of color frit, much like the sedimentary layers of the earths crust. This technique is totally revolutionary yet so natural. Fusion Art Glass is made by putting colour enamels into two pieces of glass to be fired or fused to get them to melt to the desired texture at very high temperature then cooled and put on a mold to be slumped or shaped at a lower temperature. Since the enamels are permanently sandwiched into the glass,it is absolutely non-toxic and past FDA test.It is dishwasher safe as well.Whether it is a gift for a special person,or a functional plate of art for entertaining,Fusion Art Glass has something for everyone.

A little preview of warm weather inspired this vase. This is my first piece in which I used Liquid Stringer with glass powder fused onto clear Bullseye glass, then slumped over a floral slumper. It looks great with a tealight inside!

Using desag artista art glass this piece melds into a richness of colour and movement. It was a true pleasure to work on this one off piece and has me itching for more creative flat bed fusing.

The design for this piece was adapted from an original pastel image by artist C.Baxter.

When I'm done with a large, complex project I find that making jewelry a relaxing activity. Each of my pieces is a small, unique work of abstract art. The possible variations are incredible.

I am a fustrated artist that has worked in oils, ceramic, silver and now glass. My pieces are mostly functional art for the home. Everything you see is for sale with the exception of the napkin holder and candle holder which were made for a freind as wedding gift. I am now creating more lamps in various colors and and shapes.
We now have a gallery in Frazier Park Ca. 3701 Mt. Pinos Way across from the local market.

The Naked Limb

A Soldier stands alone. His thoughts are focused on the reality of the scene. Many before him lay, naked, alone, partitioned. The branches beside him represent the nakedness of the future and the uncertainty of flourishing. They are in actuality...the same.

Fused Glass Artist: Sophie Lafrance (SOPH3)
