Praying Mantis vs Hercules Beetle!

(WesleyFleming)
While taking photos of some recent work, a fight broke out between the subjects. It comes down to this - Praying Mantis versus a Hercules Beetle. Speed versus Might.

Who will win?!?

Drip Casting * Featured Page *

Drip Casting

(MotherCrow)
Drip castings are made using weak or broken molds, under cooking (not heating to the preferred temperature or not holding long enough) and charging (adding glass) during the melting process. Because the glass must be added multiple times the melting, or dripping of the glass into (and outside of the mold) can be watched so that glass does not entirely leave the mold. The results are often stunning in their texture and variation. The examples on this page were made using recycled glass.
Madagascar hissing cockroach * Featured Page *

Madagascar hissing cockroach

(WesleyFleming)
One of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 4-5 inches at maturity. Originally from the island of Madagascar off the African coast, where they can be found in rotting logs. Unlike most cockroaches, they are wingless but are excellent climbers and can easily scale smooth glass.

Made of Effetre glass on a GTT Phantom. Measures about 2.5" x 1.5" x 0.5"

Hand carved free form scupltures

These pieces are blown/sculpted, carved and sandblasted with a layer of liquid luster to seal the suface. real nice pieces, but they take a lot of work

Venus Rising

(NudibranchArtGlass)
Finally this piece has come together, you've seen the in-progress post from a couple of months or so ago with my crappy photos, these were taken by our photographer. It was pretty tough for him to shoot this piece because of all the different qualities of the glass. Here is the finished piece. I love the contrast between our different styles of glasswork.
We entered it for consideration for the Ranamok Glass Prize and a couple of days ago we were notified that we were chosen as one of the 32 finalists. The other work we entered was "Ode to the Sun King" which you can also find in our gallery here.

“Venus Rising”
Exploring the dichotomy between the fragility of nature and the detritus of mans wasteful attitude to the earth, frivolity and lightness play across the surfaces of this object, while we are reminded that life is ephemeral. Nestled snugly within this jumble of life and rusty decay, like a treasure, is the pearly shell of a nautilus, the age-old symbol of Divine Proportion

Kamehameha Mint (Stenogyne kamehamehae)

(JupiterNielsen)
Endemic to the rainforests of Maui & Moloka'i Stenogyne kamehamehae is "mintless" Hawaiian mint. The strong smell in mint is a deterrent to insects, this mint evolved without a predator and so lost its smell.

The Sphere of Cosmic Consciousness

(TheContemporarySt...)

“The Sphere of Cosmic Consciousness”

If the experience of "cosmic consciousness" is unspeakable, it is true that in trying to utter it in words one is not "saying" anything in the sence of conveying information or making a proposition. The speech expressing such an experience is more like an exclamation. Or better, it is the speech of poetry rather than logic, though not poetry in the impoverished sense of the logical positivist, the sense of decorative and beautiful nonsense.
For there is a kind of speech that may be able to convey something without actually being able to say it. Korzybski ran into this difficulty in trying to express the apparently simple point that things are not what we say they are, that for example, the word "water" is not itself drinkable. He formulated it in his "law of nonidentity,” that “whatever you say a thing is, it isn’t.” But from this it will follow that it isn’t a thing either, for if I say that a thing is a thing, it isn’t.
What, then are we t

Speaking hands - Glass ASL

(LucidVisions)
A great way to learn American sign language, as well as sculpting the dexterity of the human hand. We had fun spelling out words for people when they saw them.

Clear borosilicate glass.

Hands approx. 4" x 2"

Meeting Place * Featured Page *

Meeting Place

(NudibranchArtGlass)
These are some preliminary shots of a new piece we've been working on called Meeting Place.
A nymph and a faun in a magical wood, the nymph is just in the process of transforming herself from a tree into her female form as the faun watches on.
The colours are heavily fumed gold and silver, the faun is silver and the nymph is gold fumed. I've put a couple of different shots of the nymph in to show the changes in colour with lights in transmission and reflection.

Dream of Fantasia I & II

(LucidVisions)
Anthurium andraeanum "Fantasia", dried bamboo and autumn grass. 20" x 11"

This is when we realized that we found our system for creating anthuriums. They took a tenth the time of our first three trys and looked even better. We also enjoyed making the bamboo, as it was a filler that was untried before and it added a new emotion to our arrangements.

Thanks for looking!

Crimson Delight I & II

(LucidVisions)
Zantedeschia, llex verticillata, and autumn grass. 31" x 8"

Trying to get a bit simpler with these arrangments, we thought the burgandy color of the calla really had a nice punch with the berries.
