2006 Eugene flame-off

2006 Eugene flame-off

(CorinneWinters)
Once again, I headed up to Eugene to compete. This time, I had a bunch of new friends I couldn't wait to see. It was the most fun I'd had blowing glass so far. There were more participants and tons of beautiful glass again. One of the exciting events was the hammer smashing demo by Pakoh and Marbleslinger. I missed it-when I came back from lunch, everyone was gathered around and I had no idea what was going on. I just heard the crash and people's reactions. I still didn't really know what happened until I saw the pictures later on Chris Carlson's gallery. Check it out if you haven't- there are tons of good pictures from the event on his page. As for me, I competed in wearables and sculpture again. This time I won first prize for sculpture, and nothing for my pendant. The prizes were even better this year-I got hooked up!!

This was the first year for the event. Considering this, it went very well. There were a few mishaps, I suppose, but overall the event was excellent. I definitely had a lot of fun. I got to meet a ton of cool new people- not only all the girls competing, but also some people who came from far away just to watch! It was pretty amazing how much interest the event sparked. It was held at high end glass, a production shop., There was a singer at first, then dj's and cool graphics of us on a big screen. It was only for one day, and we later found out the winners by email and prizes were sent out.
Glass in South Africa

Glass in South Africa

(Max)
I recently visited South Africa. What a beautiful place. I was there for three months and I spent two weeks in Pretoria, Gauteng. These photos are from a project I did at Tschwane Tech university in Pretoria. I blew glass, did a few slide talks and did some demos about found object art. Thanks to Martli, the head of their glass department. She is the only person teaching glassblowing over there and she is very cool.

The new shop in progress

The new shop in progress

(KrossinStudios)
The new shop consists of a electric drafting table with arm rests and a stainless steel top with matching stainless steel exhaust hood.
Custom made Dragon rod rests , hand made color cabinet out of an old milk dispenser.
The foot pedal is custom made , all mechanical linkage moving two 1/2 " brass ball valves.
The second bench is still in the works for teching / bench rental.
The "mushroom" style fan is mounted outside and moves 3300 cfm of air . This provides enough ventilation for both bench's and yet is near whisper quiet.
The new music system is via 7" dvd /cd / mp3 player to a modified computer spaeker set-up.

Making the

Making the "Beetle"

(AndrewBrown)
The first step was to make a blank by fusing 1" black boro rods together to make a flat tile.. After the tile was formed it was cut, rounded off on the belt sander, and sandblasted with a scarab image on the front.. Flameworked boro beetles were made and added along with with frit, opal, lusters, gold, and silver. An experimental silver transfer was added to the back before the second firing..
After moving to the annealer and cooled the piece was shaped by sandcarving around the edges to give it a weathered look ..
All in all this was a fun project to make with good friends in the new shop.. Cant wait to make more and see where this all ends up... Thanks for looking...

I was demoing at a friends gallery, Vetro Art Glass,in Grapevine, TX. The owner, David Gappa, asked my five year old if he wanted to blow a bubble. Trey said "Let's do this man!!!" No lie, he never hesitated. He listened and moved around me while I gathered and marvered, etc. The pictures say the rest. The crowd was 75-100 folks and he rocked. They went wild for him. I am a proud papa. I will have to talk to him about proper footware(and I gave up my shades to a collector for the demo).

Thanks for checking this out!
Glass is good!!!

summer holidays work

One day, while visiting a traditional market in the city of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, I came across a small glass workshop; fascinated, I watched the aged craftsman (I prefer to call him alchemist) pulling and kneading test tubes and the bottles submitting this remarkable material into the obedience of his hands.
I immediately went to purchase glass bars and blow torches and along with the rest of my studies I’ve also started investigating the artistic possibilities of this inspirational material.
