Sonoran Glass Academy Flame-Off 2006

Sonoran Glass Academy Flame-Off 2006

(JonesArtGlass)
Here we go again!!!! It was another exciting year in Tucson. The whole team at the Sonoran Glass Academy did a great job of organizng the event. The planning and coordination of 24 lampworkers, different torches, set-ups everything. It all went so smoothly and each year it gets better and better. I got pics of all the finished pieces and I'll add the names as I have match them up from my notes. Flame-offs are an excellent way to showcase your talents as well as see what your colleauges are up to. The Sonoran Flame-off draws competitors from all over the nation so it was a varied event. Marbles, marbles runs, vessels, anythong you can think of. Thanks again to David Morden, Alex the super cool table girl, Eli Aller for helping us set up so smoothly and all the rest of the "red hats" that put this thing together.

DUH!!!! I forgot my main man on the local scene Andy Ray, from "Galactic Glass" !!!!! Big Ups !!

Glass sand casting

Glass sand casting

(AndrewBrott)
While moving into my post Katrina, CERF sponsored "FEMA Studio", I found these old photos while unpacking... Here is how sand casting works: Use two or more sizes of olivine sand (differing "grain" sizes make for smoother castings), mix it with 7% to 10% of betinite clay body. This helps to hold the sand together. Slightly dampen, and run it through screens, as to sift it like cake flour. Make impressions in the sand, and spray it with a mixture of sugar and water (molasses works great). Use an acetylene torch to burn the sugar/water, and to add a layer of black carbon to the sand surface. This barrier will prevent the glass from sticking. Ladle in molten glass at 2300F. Poke vent holes under and around the poured casting, and use torches to evenly cool the glass. When the glass reaches 1150F, load it into an annealing oven to cool. Use Libinsky's annealing chart to cool to room temp. This chart can be found the Bible of Studio Glass; Henry Halem's book "Glass Notes".

Here's some shots from Troy and Andrew's last collabo here the Burque, NM. It was awesome watching "The Bolt" go from inspiration to final form. Thanks for a great Demo weekend fellas, it was pleasure checking it all at.

It was my first chance to actually meet Troy so it was cool to put a face to some of the nicest glass I've seen. Your style is super clean.

And..... to both of you cats for your Public Glass/Selman "Big Things in Small Packages" inclusions. Nice Photos!!

My daughter josie and I competed Aug. 26 at the flameoff in Eugene. It was pretty cool. Josie had a blast working in front of an audience.Wish I was that chill. We got to meet and kick it with a lot of amazing talent, and catch up with old friends. Was really cool to meet some of the regulars on GlassArtists too.Congratulations to all this years winners, it was a pleasure competing with you! There was some really tough competition this year, but everybody kicked ass! Thanks to Winship Designs for sponsoring Josie and to Eugene Glass School staff for their love and support!

Jason McGhee and I went to Boise Idaho for a little glassblowing roadtrip. Filip Vogelpohl and the Boise Crew opened a new gallery in downtown Boise called the Boise Art Gallery. The opening was on the 7th of September, and there were demo's, live music, free food and booze. The place got packed, but Jason and I kept the torches going.

2004 Eugene Flame-off

2004 Eugene Flame-off

(CorinneWinters)
This was the very first glass event I attended, and was talked into competing. I was very nervous,(especially having to work right next to the legendary Bob Snodgrass!) but I ended up with first place in the wearables category-winning a phantom. That was a HUGE change in my glassblowing-having a Nortel before the competition. I was very inspired by the awesome work I saw being made. All the people were very helpful and kind, making it one of the best experiences in my glass career! I apologize for this gallery being so incomplete-I was only there for one day, so I missed a lot of awesome work and the judging as well.
