Pics of me my studio and my dog.

(MikeSolfiell)
I Originally studied glass in Boulder Co at a beautiful studio called Northside Studio. I learned most of everything I know from Harold Coney, Ryan Rosburg, and Avrey Gross. If you would like to see some pictures of the studio in Boulder check out Harold W. Cooney's space on this site. Here are some pictures of my new studio and other things in my life.

Thought id get a few pics up while its nice and organized. Still need to throw up an exaust hood and buy a kiln down the line. Also a marble mold could make life a bit easier.
Meltdowns

Meltdowns

I believe we've all had our share of kiln accidents. My first was right after I got a kiln, about 8 years ago. Having never made a mailbox kiln, like so many of my predecesors- I didn't know anything about the controls. I own a 1210 aim, 220v; and, I had no idea it could get so hot! I melted mostly my partner's work-needless to say he was super pissed to have lost an entire day's work. Another piece shown here shows a section of my kiln's heating coil. My coil had come loose and struck the metal in the thermocouple-causing a short that rose the kiln temp. to 2500 in a short time. I had thought the kiln was ramping down, but found my day's work of rose bowls melted to the kiln shelf, and a silicate-lined hole in the back of my kiln. I have more stories of accidents too long to share in this page, but I will also say that I have learned to melt things on purpose-mostly from colorful scraps I save. I havn't decided what to do with these slabs of glass except tiles for my parents' future gaze

The new shop in progress

The new shop in progress

(KrossinStudios)
The new shop consists of a electric drafting table with arm rests and a stainless steel top with matching stainless steel exhaust hood.
Custom made Dragon rod rests , hand made color cabinet out of an old milk dispenser.
The foot pedal is custom made , all mechanical linkage moving two 1/2 " brass ball valves.
The second bench is still in the works for teching / bench rental.
The "mushroom" style fan is mounted outside and moves 3300 cfm of air . This provides enough ventilation for both bench's and yet is near whisper quiet.
The new music system is via 7" dvd /cd / mp3 player to a modified computer spaeker set-up.

Space Ship Hexagon. If you are seeing this right it has no table only Islands. It is the best way to have real flow were you need it. Your table is the most dead air in your studio. This studio is my 11th I have built. Hexagon, Vents in the floor in the base of every wall and 4 main doors angled behind me. With a metal pan like floor and a drain, all the glass can be removed with water from a hose with no sweeping or vaccuming. Hood vent with a 24" fan 4600 cfms. Don't mess around even clear borosilicate lets off toxic fumes.

Here we go...
Being that we've upgraded the size of the kilns to 5'x 3' x 2.5' we felt that it is only right that we upgrade the holes as well...

Here is a picture of the frames

The drum sizes w/o the brick will be

24" 30" and 40"x 48"

This will soon be a no limits studio just outside of Chicago.

One day @ a time......

Over the summer '07, I had my shop set up in my uncle's basement in Evergreen, in the Mountains of Colorado. It was really inspiring to be in the midst of nature, surrounded by beautiful trees and wildlife. (Not to mention the wonderful smell of pine) One morning, this deer was just chillin' right outside the shop door! I had to take some pictures before scaring him off so we could work!

I hope to add a few pictures of me working from time to time. Its hard for me to get on the computer when there is so much to do in the shop.If there were ten of me, one would be a computer wizard.

(RogerKohler)
Here is my temp torch setup while I am out in Cali escaping from the New England winter. Thanks to my brother, Randy, and cousin, Milt, for helping me get it set up so fast. It is one free standing unit that comes apart easily. Check out the 1950's vent-a-hood range hood. Those old fans really rip!
