Alice Benvie Gebhart

As an artist I specialize in fusing glass together to create an image of color and light. As with any artistic process one must start with an idea. My ideas and inspirations come from nature. I mentally record, take photographs and sketch the scenery around me emphasizing color and light in my compositions. Working off the sketches Iíve created, I then cut and layer colored glass, specifically made for glass fusing, in a kind of collage. This is fired in a glass kiln to temperatures as high as 1500 degrees, often 4-5 times to obtain the desired effect. I often include specialty glasses such as dichroic glass and iridescent glass to give my work a luminescent quality. Glass paints, gold and silver leaf, mica, copper and other distinctive ingredients are sometimes inserted in the glass to create special effects within each piece. The completed pieces are transformed into either wall art or free-standing sculptures.

My first shift-knob

I made this in 2008, for the Dichrome contest. Unfortuantely it was too small and fragile and it ended up breaking during the drilling process. I glued it back together and she'll end up on the dash of Rose's 51 Pontiac.

EGS flame-off 2008

This year, Rose Winters(my cousin and glass partner)and I traveled together thanks to our parents- Mike, Audrey, Terry, and Diana Winters for getting our airline tickets. Also, many thanks to Glasscraft and Chameleon for our entry fees and supplies. And to T-bone for letting us use his car! And of course to Gabe and Fawn for their gracoius hospitality! It was Rose's first competition and she rocked! She took first in wearables and in team sculpture along with myself. It was a great weekend in which many beautiful works of art were created. Unfortunately, we had to miss Lee Fest, a music festival in honor of our friend Lee, who passed away last year. We made up for it my wearing shirts bearing his name while competing and I made a bead featuring mica from Yegge peak(where he once lived) and silver he gave me. Many thanks to all the volunteers and staff who made this great event happen. I will update this as soon as I can confirm things. My apologies to anyone if I messed up- let me know

Abuela

Abuela means "grandmother". This sculpture finally came together as a very literal translation of our experience on the mountain in Peru. It's mixed media, the backing board is english elm, the base is a huge banksia hundreds of years old, coyote, snake, lizard, beaver, bobcat, macaw, turkey, various suedes and other parrot feathers. Lampwork, casting and pate de verre were used for the glass objects. Various cold-working techniques were also used, such as diamond cutting, engraving and carving as well as sandblasting with and without masks. It's a bit over 2m tall. Animal products are re-claimed from old pelts or obtained through the generous members of the Avicultural Society of Australia, all the wood is obtained from stormfall. cheers Chris

3-D Desert Scenes

Here are several pendants with a night desert scene. I'm not sure that you can really tell in the pics, but they are very 3-D. I am working on a new series of marbles for a museum, so I am using these as practice pieces (I have two practice marbles in the kiln right now......finger's crossed). I made 16 of them yesterday. With each one I kept figuring out new ways to make them look more interesting. I think the marbles will be pretty sweet, I'll be sure to post some nice photo's once I get some made that I really like. I have to say that if I could make whatever I want, it would be things like this.
