Little Black Book 2007

Little Black Book is a new series of work by Rachel Gretton. The work is created in response to a new phase in her emotional journey: motherhood. The work addresses a lot of complex often conflicting circumstances: joy, anxiety, change, the loss of identity and dreams.

Earth and Wind

Here's two figures which a commission from last year asked for to round off two original figures made over 2 years ago. This is the blurb for the original two figures: "Through the millennia art has dealt with many ways of representing allegorical ideas, relating concepts and ideals in stories to the human form and its relationships to various elemental entities. Glass comes from fire as a liquid, and the relationship between fire and liquid is like a dance in the glassmakerís hands. In OPUS #1 fire and liquid engage in a stately cotillion." I tried to write more on my trials and tribulations on the thoughts behind the add-on figures, but for some reason the promised word-count didn't come through for me :P ... this always hap

Fashion Necklaces

This is my newest and most exciting line of Glass Jewelry. I have been working for months to figure out the right technique to create a one of a kind hand made Necklace. But I now love this way to express myself through Jewelry. Each necklace is one of a kind unless otherwise specified. So you there will be no way in the world anyone will have the same piece of art around there neck. I mix my colors so there will be a slight different shade in each string of beads. All Necklaces are 16in. To 18 in. In length. Please specify a size when ordering if different than the standard size.

Tropic Sunrise

Heliconia latispatha, strelitzia reginae "Bird of Paradise", bamboo, and anthurium andraeanum. 38" x 15" This was the ultimate arrangment with complexity of design throughout the Heliconia and the bird of paradise. Needless to say we learned more in this arrangment than all of them together. We were very excited to see this vision a reality and it was entirely made in the heat of the summer when our studio was pushing well over 100 degrees.

Crimson Delight I & II

Zantedeschia, llex verticillata, and autumn grass. 31" x 8" Trying to get a bit simpler with these arrangments, we thought the burgandy color of the calla really had a nice punch with the berries.

Dream of Fantasia I & II

Anthurium andraeanum "Fantasia", dried bamboo and autumn grass. 20" x 11" This is when we realized that we found our system for creating anthuriums. They took a tenth the time of our first three trys and looked even better. We also enjoyed making the bamboo, as it was a filler that was untried before and it added a new emotion to our arrangements. Thanks for looking!

Meeting Place

These are some preliminary shots of a new piece we've been working on called Meeting Place. A nymph and a faun in a magical wood, the nymph is just in the process of transforming herself from a tree into her female form as the faun watches on. The colours are heavily fumed gold and silver, the faun is silver and the nymph is gold fumed. I've put a couple of different shots of the nymph in to show the changes in colour with lights in transmission and reflection.

Speaking hands - Glass ASL

A great way to learn American sign language, as well as sculpting the dexterity of the human hand. We had fun spelling out words for people when they saw them. Clear borosilicate glass. Hands approx. 4" x 2"
