Katherine MacDonald Handmade Lampwork Beads and Jewelry

I am totally in love with floral beads. Even when I make an organic bead or bead set flowers seem to find their way onto my beads. Take a look at my beads in the gallery below and if you like visit my auctions on eBay. The web address is listed below in my profile.

FocalOpal_02

2-1/16” diameter. One side is a beautiful fumed honeycomb with a firey Gilson White Pear Opal in the centerpoint, and the otherside is a deep dichro galaxy made from CBS Rainbow dichro. The middle band is Elvis (Ruby) over white and large dots of clear were placed on top to create the spotted look. The lenses are bordered by Almond Nugget and Clear Encasement pinwheeled dots. Signed and dated by the artist, “NM-06”

The Process

Pictures of the construction and design process of Illuminating the Spirit. Working with the kids was the fun part. The challenge was really getting the lighting to illuminate the entire sculpture. We'd never worked with plexi glass before, so that was quite a challenge to cut and drill. The other challenge was realizing that the discs had to be put in a very particular order to have the right amount of coverage and colors needed to flow smoothly.

My old studio...

I have been wanting to do this for a long time... the bench is 8' by 8' and has a shelf underneath for cases of glass, it is topped with 3/4 inch plywood, then hardibacker board, then stainless steel... the bench also hides a four-port manifold with quick connects... thanks to Jake Harper and Perry Barnard out in Wimberley TX... together we cut, welded, and grinded the metal to make the glavanised hood... two 8" SECO air hog fans pull about 2450 cfm... the fans then push the exhaust outside (thanks Ro)

1st Flower Marble Attempts

I love to make flower implosion pendants and at the urging of Joe who pushes me to try new things, I made a couple of flower marbles. They are not nearly as big as any of his. To be sure I wouldn't win with these shooters but hey nobody's going to be playing marbles with my babies anyway:)

3rd attmept Joe's Marbles

Here is one more of Joe's marbles/ this one is very dark/ there is an opal in the middle but the pics don't show it very well. The back of this marble is really great.
