You know that embarrassing moment when you're out to dinner, perhaps on a first date, when you realize you have something stuck in your teeth? Well this little fellow was having a nice munch on some greens and found himself in the unfortunate situation of getting a rather large piece of spinach stuck in his teeth. Luckily he is armed with lengthy antennae which come in quite handy in such a situation!

Among the largest of beetles, rhinoceros beetles are also the strongest animals on the planet, proportionally. They can lift up to 850 times their own weight - if a human had the strength of these beetles, it would be able to lift an Abrams Tank!

The scarab beetle enjoyed sacred status among ancient Egyptians. The scarab was linked to Khepri, god of the rising sun. The supposed self-creation of the beetle resembles that of Khepri, who creates himself out of nothing.
The ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day. The image of the scarab, conveying ideas of transformation, renewal, and resurrection, is ubiquitous in ancient Egyptian religious and funerary art.

Having evolved during the late Gothic period, this unfortunate creature never transformed out of the ugly stage. That said, it is purported to have the most beautiful bugle of all geese due to its seriously enlarged nasal passages.

The dung beetle (often referred to as the sacred scarab), enjoyed a sacred status among the ancient Egyptians. The scarab was linked to Khepri, the god of the rising sun. Females can be 8 inches long and are covered with short spines. Instinctively, they mimic scorpions - walking with their tales curved up and over as they walk.
The claws consist of 2 hooks and a suction cup between them allowing them to climb on almost any surface. In their natural habitat they feed on eucalyptus.

One of the most primitive groups of insects with close relatives identified from the Carboniferous and Lower Permian geological periods, they are found in both the Southern and Northern hemispheres.
All species of Plecoptera are pollution intolerant and their presence in a stream or still water is usually an indicator of good or excellent water quality.

In eastern Europe the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) had a reputation for fire raising. The males were thought to carry glowing embers with their large mandibles to a thatched roof and were also believed to attract lightning. Turkish good luck charms use the male jaws to ward off evil.

Rhinoceros beetles are the strongest animals on the planet, proportionally. They can lift up to 850 times their own weight. To put this into perspective, if a human of average height and weight had the strength of the rhinoceros beetle, it would be able to lift a 65 ton object, for example, an Abrams Tank.

With the seasons changing from fall to winter, the normal species of insect have gone into hibernation. Now the strange, previously unknown insects begin to crawl out of the woodwork. The Thorny Dung-Muncher is just such a beast.

One of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 4-5 inches at maturity. Originally from the island of Madagascar off the African coast, where they can be found in rotting logs. Unlike most cockroaches, they are wingless but are excellent climbers and can easily scale smooth glass.

My sister just got married at the beginning of September and I made this cake topper for their reception. This was a challenging project as I don't normally do this much architecture on my sculptures. It was a lot of fun though, and sure felt like a nice gift for my sis!

I've been working small lately, trying to get a better grip on my human(oid) figures and proportion. Here's the small take on my Kudu Women series.
Unfortunately, this lovely lady suffered a fatal fall during our ill-fated photo shoot...
Previous to her fall from glory, she stood about 3" tall including the stand. She was made of Effetre glass on a GTT Phantom.

Beetles! All made from Effetre (COE 104) glass on a GTT Lynx. Two are fantasy beetles and one is an exact replica of a species endemic to the mountais of Taiwan. A friend of a friend researches these "longhorn" beetles in Taiwan and gave me a book which he wrote solely on this type of beetle. 611 different species of longhorns live in Taiwan!

"The Asian long-horned beetle, translated as Sky Ox in Chinese, is native to China where it causes widespread mortality of poplar, willow, elm, and maple throughout vast areas of eastern Asia. An invasive species in the United States, the larva of this beetle has a voracious appetite for wood. Females of this species chew into the bark and lay eggs. When the eggs hatch, the immature beetles, which look like big white worms, chew their way farther into the tree. When they mature, the full-grown beetles chew their way out of the tree. The beetle life cycle leaves trees riddled with holes, oozing sap. The USDA believes this beetle can probably survive and reproduce in most sections of the country where suitable host trees exist. This little grasshopper is headed south, to the warm climes of Georgia. There he will feast on shards of glass to become great and terrible. He is accompanied by a beetle - a friend of his, but whom shall remain anonymous at this time.
