The scarab beetle enjoyed sacred status among ancient Egyptians. The scarab was linked to Khepri, god of the rising sun. The supposed self-creation of the beetle resembles that of Khepri, who creates himself out of nothing.
The ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day. The image of the scarab, conveying ideas of transformation, renewal, and resurrection, is ubiquitous in ancient Egyptian religious and funerary art.

The dung beetle (often referred to as the sacred scarab), enjoyed a sacred status among the ancient Egyptians. The scarab was linked to Khepri, the god of the rising sun. The supposed self-creation of the beetle resembles that of Khepri, who creates himself out of nothing. Moreover, the dung ball rolled by a dung beetle resembles the sun.

Females can be 8 inches long and are covered with short spines. Instinctively, they mimic scorpions - walking with their tales curved up and over as they walk. The claws consist of 2 hooks and a suction cup between them allowing them to climb on almost any surface. In their natural habitat they feed on eucalyptus.

Native to the rain forests of Central and South America, their title is well deserved as they are one of the largest beetles known. This scarab beetle is most noted for its thoracic and cephalic horns, which can grow longer than the body of the beetle itself. This adaptation is primarily used during fights with other males.

Beetles! All made from Effetre (COE 104) glass on a GTT Lynx. Two are fantasy beetles and one is an exact replica of a species endemic to the mountais of Taiwan. A friend of a friend researches these "longhorn" beetles in Taiwan and gave me a book which he wrote solely on this type of beetle. 611 different species of longhorns live in Taiwan!

"An insect of the order Mantodea, they are in fact named for the typical "prayer-like" stance. The word mantis derives from the Greek word mantis for prophet or fortune teller. Mantids use their specialized forelegs to capture prey and can be found in a wide variety of colors, patterns, & shapes."

"The Asian long-horned beetle, translated as Sky Ox in Chinese, is native to China where it causes widespread mortality of poplar, willow, elm, and maple throughout vast areas of eastern Asia. An invasive species in the United States, the larva of this beetle has a voracious appetite for wood. Females of this species chew into the bark and lay eggs. When the eggs hatch, the immature beetles, which look like big white worms, chew their way farther into the tree. When they mature, the full-grown beetles chew their way out of the tree. The beetle life cycle leaves trees riddled with holes, oozing sap. The USDA believes this beetle can probably survive and reproduce in most sections of the country where suitable host trees exist. The beetle has also invaded Britain, Austria and Germany." - adapted from Wikipedia.org

Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I spent my days exploring the space beneath logs and rocks or reading science fiction. As a result the shapes and colors of the natural world, as well as my own wacky imagination, are the main sources for my work.
With some of my glass beetles for example, I try to capture and mimic an actual species with intricate detail on the tiny limbs and thorax. While in other pieces, I attempt to bring into being a creature from an inner reality or a dream. In some cases I merge the fantastical with the real through choice of color palette or by referencing familiar images in a mythical work.
Regardless of the end result, I find great joy in sculpting glass - witnessing the transformation of a brittle and cold substance to a molten and pliable material then back to a solid form again.
Sincerely, Wesley Fleming
