My inspiration comes from many sources. Shape and form of the world around me stimulate my imagination. I watch for shapes formed in the trees every morning when I wake up. The branches and leaves form faces and animals. I see images like these in most things I look at. It is as if my eye is always trying to figure out what the ‘ink blot’ looks like to me at the moment. Ideas also stem from dreams. I sometimes dream about making a piece, or a theme arises from remembrance.

Borosilicate lampworked sculptures emit the spirit of the animals they represent. This is just a taste of the roots of a new series of sculptures designed to enchant even the left-brained. Inspired by the combination of an unknown mosaic artist, lampworker Nancy Nagel's video 'When frog s talk' available at www.crloo.com and my passion for all things furry, feathered, fishy and flighty. A twist of tongue combined with a twist of glass will brighten your day. Delivery date is scheduled for 2006. Check www.rosglassworld.com for recent births.

When I was young my parents owned a pet shop. I used to sit and stare at the tanks and imagine I was in there exploring. Later in life I was an avid scuba diver, until an accident in 97 that made use of my ankle difficult. I have many memories involving sea life in some way. A few days ago I had a dream about a fish. That day I began making fish. I used techniques I learned in Vittorio Costantini's class at corning last year. although I used borosilicate not soda lime as in the class. The aquatic life I am currently working on are loose representations of actual fish/plants. I am not attempting to replicate specific fish for now. It is freeing to work loosely with this collection.

Chain link necklaces sculpted in borosillicate glass. I have a facination with these, more to come! I am testing a bracelet to see if its sturdy enough.

Ive been working on and off with bottle stoppers, adding new designs as I imagine them. Currently working on aquatic life theme's. The corks are pure white gum size #2 Laboratory stoppers tapering from 5/8" to 7/8".

Exploring the shape and essence of a bird, I have decided to focus on a birds interaction with its environment and take advantage of their wonderful variety of color in an abstract way. I am continually experimenting with pairing glass, metal and other mediums. I enjoy soldering and welding and am using this series to express different combinations.

One of my original memories of first loving glass was seeing a show where a woman fused a huge glass piece. I have found I like making clocks the best, but now with a second kiln ready I will be experimenting with more fused and slumped works.

My excitement around any holiday is just as bad as when i was a child. I love to make themed ornaments and gifts. I am inspired mainly by the season to make items that are representative to the holidays of the current season. Fall is my favorite, second by winter then spring and summer. Each one wonderful and giving life to the anticipation of the next season.

Sculpture blown and solid focusing on insects and related themes. I took a class with Vitorrio Costantini last year at Corning, Birds, fish and insects. I took the class really to see him, We met in Italy originally I was able to watch him work for a few days. I was impressed with the insects, but they were a bit creepy too. It's funny I'm getting bug requests now and after making a few I'm enjoying making them. I find legs to be very challenging!

Vessels are lampworked on a GTT Mirage. Each piece is designed to capture your eye in form and movement. I find the more a piece makes me smile the more popular it is to those who view it. As I expand my studio, therefore expanding my ability to create, I move away from tight technical detail into a more whimsical inspiration for design. Life is too short not to invoke lightness of heart to each piece I create.

As I explore the combination of metal and glass art I feel the freedom to create larger work. This is the first piece of wall art in this collection. I intend more wall pieces as well as outdoor installations.

Mixed media projects made with recycled glass/bottles. The origin of this series was a challenge on my yahoo glassblowing group to make anything out of recycled bottles for feb 06. I had many ideas, figures at first, my dad had the ship idea. Apparently they came out just like he imagined. Since then the fleet has expanded. I made Ship out of a Bottle II and Sail boat out of a Bottle april 06. I found it much easier the second time around, working faster while shaping the main ships was better than the first attempt, which I struggled through being unfamiliar of how the glass would work in the flame. Bottles are stiff or runny, very little room for in-between.I changed the order of shaping as well. Relief hole first, neck second, deck, then bottom. Worked better than the order I used for the original Ship. the hardest part was pulling stringers from the bottle without getting bubbles for the masts. I will likely explore more recycled projects.

Borosilicate remote control helicopter sculpture. The rotor blades (boro sheet), tail stabilizer, and skids are created first and are added as the body is sculpted hot. Shape and color pattern are reminiscent of RC pilots individual designs worldwide. Scale heli's to come. The sculptures are flameworked using a GTT Mirage. Each RC helicopter takes approx. 2-3 hrs to complete including all prep work. Scale designs can take up to 4 hours to create.

This collection started with a HeadPin Rosanimal TM and grew as my aquatic series did. I cant seem to stop making heads right now. This collection also inspired me to begin a series of magnets , cufflinks, tie bars and anything else I can epoxy. I have always had a fascination with glue (my favorite isle at the hardware store) I have finally found a few formulas that work well. I currently have cabinet knobs in test phase as well. It is a great feeling of freedom to not have to connect all aspects of my work as 'hot' glass.

As I continue to create Rosanimal TM designs, I find some of them are more expression of thought rather than animals. Here are the beginnings of A New Breed of Rosanimal TM.

I am continuing to create pieces with a story or an interaction between elements. I was always fascinated with miniature worlds and dioramas. I am beginning to look outside of colored glass to accent my work. I have begun experimenting with sandblasting and oil painting as well as continuing to use mixed media in my art.

Here are some pics of my studio upgrades. Vent hood is 46x31x12. It is rectangular ducts from home depot with extra flats between to give more width. Ducts are 8" to the fans then reduces to 7" to exit the house. The fans are SECO Air Hog 8" utility blowers 1250 cfm each. I found them on ebay for 69$. Torch table is 7'x4' and 32" tall, covered in removable sheetrock (its an experiment working out great so far), Sheet glass table is 8'x4'x 41" tall and has dividers on the bottom for standing glass, It is covered in masonite with a 3'x4' plexi section taped under wet cutting area. Pegboard on the side by cutting station to hang bits in bins/tools. Thin under shelf is for bins to store scraps/supplies.

I have been working on getting realistic movement in nudes, facial detail and now clothed figures. I find soda lime, 104, to be easier to add detail than in borosilicate. I will be experimenting with 90 coe as well. It remains a challenge to have the figures turn out technically as I want. My focus on this work is more about expressing the idea or message in the piece and its flow.

"I went to Disney world with my family when i was about eight years old. There was a booth in the center of Main Street, where someone was lampworking using the crochet technique. That was it for me, it was magic. I spent hours that first day, constantly begging my parents to still be left there to watch, thankfully they agreed! Since then I've been facinated with glass and its movement".

soda lime fish
yes mike, i learned fish from Vittorio Costantini originally in soda lime. I use all coe now, depends on my mood and the piece i want to make. I translated the techniques to boro as best as possible, it is much easier in soda lime due to ease of clear coat and acceptance of tooling. Boro resists all! It's a good challenge though. Ro
