September 2001...
I called Soloman Smith Barney and cashed out the rest of my invested stocks that I had in Home Depot to re-invest into, some said, a riskier endevor. It was time to really follow my heart and go for it. My friend Ryan, a year old flameworker at the time, brought me to his leaders (suppliers) and I purchased everything he told me I would need to start a lampworking studio. In a storage facility that was attached to my house at the time ventilation was installed, a torch and tools were laid out, compressed oxygen and propane began to feed my bench burner. The journey, still very new, opened so many doors and presented gifts of all kinds. I began to feel as if destiny opened up a car door and said, "Get in, we're going somewhere."

The vehicle began to move in the great northwest region of Corvallis, Oregon where I soon realized I was surrounded by a community of lampworkers with an immense amount of talent. This led to many sessions and discussions of the nature of borosilicate glass and where it is today as an art form. Blessed am I to have landed in a part of the country where some of the most contemporary techiniques in flameworking emerged. Life really speaks to you when a real effort is put to do the right thing and follow your heart. The once "wierd" coincidences become guides that light your path when the trail becomes dark.
