Julie R. RiggsPosted by Julie R. Riggs on 1/25/2004These are the wonderful teachers I have learned much from over the past 9 years,
Shane Fero & Fred Birkhill (who I consider my biggest influences & mentors, they were my first teachers & have taught me more about glass, the community & its history than anyone!) also...Paul Stankard, Lucio Bubacco, Milon Townsend, Sally Prasch, Loren Stump, Emilio Santini, Kristina Logan, Eric Goldschmidt, Beth Lipman, Roger Parramore, Jen Zitkov, Marcel Braun, Walter Hellbach, Robert Mickelsen,Vittorio Costantini, Ric Allen and Ed Schmid. Also all the talented friends I have made in my travels (too many to list but you know who you are!) have had as much of an influence on my life & my work as all the classes combined! Images

I made this bouquet for my best friends wedding. It has 7 glass flowers, 6 glass curly swirls, glass leafs (on the crystal vines), Swarovski Crystals, Swarovski Pearls, gold & colored wires, natural & dyed peacock feathers and gold ribbon tooling...all together on a clear bouquet ball. I also made her a throwing bouquet out of the silk flowers I used as models for the glass, extra feathers and crystals. I made her husband a matching lapel pin. |

When I visited Lauscha, Germany I took a private lesson with Master Eyeball maker Walter Hellbach. These are some rings made out of boro using the techniques I learned from him (using Lauscha Glass) |

This is the very first flower pendent with faceted center I made. The center is mostly clear so when worn over any color it shows through. I really liked how it came out so I made 2 others the next night with some other pieces I had practiced faceting with. All 3 are for sale on the marketplace. |
|
|
I just got a Faceting thingie and these are some of my first faceted pieces. |

This boquet of roses was commissioned as a gift for Marks Mother...the feather accents are dyed peacock feathers |
|
|
Our neighbors asked us to make them a few wine stoppers for the holidays & they showed them to their friends & colleagues who ordered lots more...simple prodo pieces...but paid for our "new" 73 VW Squareback :) |

This Past weekend I held my first class out of my studio (aka The Bat Cave). These are some pics from that class & random studio shots. It was tons of fun & I can't wait to teach more! Gremlin also came over to guest demo & colab (see GP for pics) |

more pics of new work coming soon!!! |

My daughter calls this my Dr. Suess piece...it is sandblasted & oil painted & the beads going up the stem are moveable. |

This tree of life woman is pregnant with a polished opal & behind her are the mountains and night sky with an opal full moon (also signifying fertility). |
|
|
This tree of life woman menorah was inspired by a Jewish musician. In his music I didn't so much as hear a religious message as a spiritual one (I tend to tune out religious babble anyway) His message of love and life and light shown through and she was the vision his music created in my head. Her candles glow in the dark and are filled with oil and each has a small wick (not in the pic) |

This Genie perfume bottle stands about 5in tall and has a tiny bellydancing genie dropper inside. It also had a protecting eye on the top and in the center of the flower. I've been taking Bellydancing classes for a few years now & have found it very inspiring. I plan on making many more bellydance related glass objects (and am currently working on a full glass bellydance costume complete with glass coins) |

This was an oil lamp I made at AGI this year for Barrys competition. There were 15 names drawn and we were each given a pack with all less than a foot of a small piece of ionx tube, a small clear tube, i forget what other size clear tube, some clear rod, a wick & 3 ugly colors & were not allowed to use any other material & given till 7pm the next day to make an oil lamp (which knowing flameworkers turned into 3 days later) Everyone made amazing things & my vote went to Mike Shelbos awesome goblin, but I ended up winning 1st place with this piece |

These are pictures from Ed Shmids fall concentration class @ Penland. This was the first Hot Shop class I've ever taken. I really enjoyed the class & Ed is a wonderful teacher, however I discovered quickly that I'm a Flameworker at heart! I took the class just to learn the basics of the hot shop. Ed told us those 2 months were equal to 2 years of normal classes. (i'm having problems uploading pics so I'll try to put more up tomorrow) |

This Goblet was ordered specifically to have a light cobalt body with cobalt and dark cobalt wings. Above the angels head sits an encased black opal. The top is adorned with a dicro image with dark cobalt backing. |

This piece was special ordered by a Dr.'s Wife as a gift for her husband in light blue and clear. It is the age old medical symbol with two snakes wrapping around a winged pole. |

This 10" panel was made during an experimental class I took at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Our focus was a class project of a three panel depiction of the Divine Comedy. This was my first practice piece for the process we were experimenting with. I made the silhouetted figures flat on the torch with soft glass. In the hot shop I arranged powders and frits inside a graphite mold and hot glass was ladled over it then the figures were added, torched briefly and another layer of clear glass was ladled over them. The scene depicted is of a Devil holding his pitchfork up triumphantly displaying the severed head of the Angel. |

This Goblet features a torso stem(caramel with paracilicate white coating) entwined in grape vines and leafs. Ruby red grapes adorn the top and base and wrap over the shoulders. |

This is a piece I made during Roger Parramores class to Penland School of Crafts in August 2002. I had only been working with glass for a year and a half at the time. |
