(Glass Sculptures)

Flute I got commissioned to make a flute for a local town icon a couple of weeks ago. He's a flute player and has lived in that area for 35 odd years and is moving to the city. He has produced and recorded over 30 albums of his music over a wide range of genres.
The flutes' body is hollow and will be filled with sand from the beach for him to take wherever he goes. The model is 1:1 and I tried to get it as accurate as possible. Originally I was going to make a horizontal stand for it, but after playing around I decided that a diagonal stand would suit it much better. It almost looks like a Japanese sword that way.

"Where I live, there's a homeless man who sits upon a crate. He makes a rusty trumpet sound like the music that angels make! If you ever get to visit, I suggest you watch the show, Tell him Aesop Rock sent you just to hear his horn blow! like this~~~~"

Aloha!

hiyas,

thanks for the comments, I kind of enjoy working just in clear every now and then, in a demented sort of way. This flute almost made me sit in a corner and cry, after I'd put on all the valves, it cracked on the body! Doing too much without keeping it all warm is one of my major failings, although I get away with it more often than I really should. After giving it some soft bushy love, the crack completely healed, though, without leaving that usual tell-tale white line ... lucky me, I didn't really want to start all over again. The flute took me about 4 hours, including kiln heats and prep work. It's not playable, I originally talked to my client about making it a solid sculpture, but then one of the people involved suggested mixing sand into the glass ... after explaining how glass works and how mixing sand with it wouldn't, I suggested the hollow body to fill the sand in. The mouthpiece is a superficial overlay which I pre-cut with a diamond wheel out of a larger tube.
