Hanging in the Balance
City Boots Fremont Street Artist; Some Neighbors Say Good Riddance

On the other hand, maybe not all publicity is good publicity.

Fawzi Benhariz, also known as Benny, also known as "the rock balancer," has been building intricately balanced rock sculptures in Fremont for more than two years. The City of Seattle has shut down his sidewalk sculptures in part, Benny thinks, because of a profile of him in the April issue of Seattle Metropolitan magazine. Some locals, who describe Benny as a great artist and neighborhood icon, are pissed; others, who say he's a moody public nuisance, are relieved.

Roughly two weeks after the profile was published, and two years after Benny began regularly building his rock sculptures, the city's Department of Transportation said he had tto have a Street Use permit..."

"Posting Glass Pipes on GlassArtists.org
----------------------------------------
Because non-functional pipe pieces have started to crop up I have further clarified the "no pipes" rule for GlassArtists.org. Functional pipe pieces may not be posted, and non-functional pipe art is allowed. A
non-functional pipe is one that is either impossible or would be very difficult to actually use as a smoking device, one that is a part of a larger art piece, or one that is so large, awkward, or otherwise impractical that it's very unlikely that it's owner would ever consider using it as a smoking device. I think to most of you who make pipes this distinction should be fairly clear but if you have a true borderline case let me know and I will consider it. Please note that I will not make an
exception just because a pipe is especially elaborate, beautiful, expensive or artistic, as long as it looks like it COULD be used as a
functional piece." -from site admin

ummmm
you support him by putting his face on a beer can and crush him while wearing USA socks ... OMG, I can see the link ... those stacked rocks were weapons of mass obstruction! Will they ever really find them, I wonder?

It's the unfortunate lot of most street artists that they get swept away in what is bureaucracy's answer to the "destruction" of their purrfect urban landscape. Sure it looks good on a computer ... if you're the kind of dickhead who chooses to lock himself in an oxygen tent every night (to keep away the cooties, you know) ... but the reality is that the people don't live in computers ... they live in the real world and have real voices ....

LET BENNY KEEP HIS VOICE! ... even if it is the silence of rocks ...
