I enjoy exploring the contrasts between transparent and opaque glass, often reflecting the organic nature of plant materials. I’m striving for fluidity in form, to cause uncertainty, and to encourage the desire to touch. When people look at my work, I want them to have a sense of familiarity, while at the same time seeing something they have not seen before. I enjoy making objects that people want to live with, that enhance their pleasure in their own surroundings.
The inspiration for this current cycle of work comes from aboriginal textiles around the world. I do not try to replicate ancient designs, but rather absorb and reinterpret the motifs and themes that have had meaning for humans for thousands of years.

Randy Comer’s interest in glass began in 1985 with a stained glass course at San Francisco City College, leading to the study of traditional glass painting techniques. Once Comer saw the possibilities the kiln offered the glass artist, he was hooked. A graphic designer by training, he brings a bold approach to his designs as he explores the contrasting nature of the glass itself.
