Petite Satsuma Basket A U.L.(Underwriters Laboratories)listed mixed media blown glass “Lit Sculpture” 25”x 25”x 36” for a private residence November 2007. This, and all of my Satsuma Baskets, are based off the hanging baskets I see everyday living in New Orleans. The frame is copper plated steel, and a single 100-watt type A-incandescent bulb illuminates the sculpture.

I get to design and build work for many wonderful client/friends homes and collections. I begin with a space, a budget, and a design concept; craft without theory is just an object, fine art is mysterious and well crafted.

Most of my work is commissioned by out of town collectors; notice the quality of daylight in this photo, it is November in New Orleans around 11am. As an artist who works with light, I love knowing this type of info, and working for hometown clients.

I wonder how many times I use the word research in a month; too many I’m sure, but so much of what I do is research, its like an architect using “sustainable” or “green”, I can’t help but use it. My research for this piece included this scale model.

Model was too small for the space

I am an “Art and Crafts” Sculptor, and NOT the “crafty” type so often seen in that Style of Magazine, but the type who uses Art and Crafts Design Principles similar to those started by John Ruskin and William Morris in the 19th century.

Making custom work, I start with pictures, plans, or drawings of the space, then apply my “AC” Design Principles to create space. These same “ACDP”, separate my work from Dale Chihully and his COUNTLESS imitators. I am “AC” to their “Gilded Victorian”..

This overly bright photo shows the copper plated metal finish. The completed Sculpture may look heavy, but only weighs 32.5lbs.

No need for light...

Labels can be good and bad; my “U.L. label” is VERY good as this is constructed and tested to be safe ; ”Chandelier” can be a bad label if the “maker” just makes an object lacking theory. This Lit Basket Sculpture “works” even with the lights off…

Built to use a 300 watt bulb.

A 100-watt Type A incandescent bulb was more than bright enough. And yes, it is VERY EASY TO CHANGE; I will be happy to demonstrate how to any persons or institution that purchase my work… Happy Holidays 2007 Andrew Brott
