(Functional Art Glass)

~6/07~ Glass Drum I made this piece during my visit to Penland for the spring concentration. Some of us from the class took a drum making class at the end. We strung them up and got help putting on the skins. They sound great! Thanks go out to Martin, Lance and Billy for hooking this up!!!

Wow
Nice, I bet there could be a real market for these if they sound good. Nice job, like Wes said, how does it sound?

Thank you for the comments!
It has a very clear tone and it will vibrate the walls & vents if indoors. It definatly has some good bass to it. We were all suprised on the sound from the glass, i assumed it would make a dampened and kind of a hollow/lifeless sound. I was very wrong! More to come in August and BIGGER!

Most definitely!
Glass drums have a very bright sound. I've been playing percussion for about 22 years. I've heard a few glass drums in my day, and they are bright sounding. Resonant highs and ominous lows. You can definitely explore shapes for different responses. I'm looking forward to seeing these grow and develop. I definitely want one in my collection of hand drums one day. Great work! Keep it up!

How did you create an cylinder that is open at both ends?
How did you create an cylinder that is open at both ends?
Did you construct it like a vase and then
take the end off cold with a diamond saw?

p.s. Awesome! I don't work that big (yet). Maybe I'll make a little bongo.
