Vorcello # 2 & # 3

  « 2. Glass Marbles 2007

(Glass Marbles)

Vorcello # 2 & # 3 Oh yes these are fun when they pull together nicely. These first one is 2 inches and the second is 1 & 3/4. I made one the other day and forgot to turn the kiln on . I thru it in the cold kiln and flipped it on. It blew up!! I always need a reminder to keep me on my toes.

Nudibranch Art Glass
stunning!
from every angle!
people get so impressed with size that they seem to forget that what's really magical is that glass does what it does!
thanks for the reminder!

too bad...
why did it blow up, air or maby the sparkel collor? I have heated up 2 1/2" marbels in my kinl to 1150, puntied up to them and fixed a ding....Vortex and all.
maby the clear is not so good? Crazy, you never can tell what this stuff might do...At least you got plenty of good pictures.

Maybe it was the fact of how much was going on in the center. Maybe it has some air in the layers. Sometime certain process are just hard on the glass and it doesn't except it to well. Lets just say it can be volitale in certain situations. Most likely I just made a mistake and then that mistake got the best of the marble in a cold kiln. I do think if that kiln was hot it might have survived the immediate cool down when it was finished. I took it as a learing experience because I got to study the inners of the marble. And a reminder to turn the friggin kiln on.

Oh yeah!
So it must be the sudden drop in temperature that is the main factor. When you put in a vortex that is cool and raises up slowly in temp. It handles the heat fine but when this marble was just finished the temperature drops quick in a cold kiln so the stress won. The two situations are very different. Plus your vortex has already gone thru an annealing cycle.
