EGS Flame-off '09

EGS Flame-off '09

Ah, Eugene! Once again, I had an amazing time. The school always puts on a great show and a well organized event. People really stepped it up this year- filling up almost all the spots in every category! The competition was stiff!
I competed in the EGS challenge (always a TON of fun) and made it to the second round. I also attempted to make a large fountain with my good friend David Popowitz. We had our share of obstacles, but it's all about having fun, right? Rose Winters (my amazing cousin and apprentice) got first place in wearables again-I'm SO proud of her!! Saturday night's party featured Clinton Roman's band with a grand finale of blacklight dragon dancing, while Michael Hengler's hot shop team created a large furnace-worked boro vase from Northstar mystery aventurine (with a hint of pomegranate)and pulled it off on the 3rd attempt! Big ups to Gabe and Fawne for their hospitality, Aymie for helping us get the party, and of course Abe for the amazingly beautiful tubing!

Female Flame Off 2009

Female Flame Off 2009

Trinity Glassworks, Dallas, TX. October 17th- 19th.
Thanks to all who supported and participated in another great event.

Thanks Roze! We all had a great time, and supported the Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.

These girls (and guys in drag) did a wonderful job!

The mystery box theme was picked out of a hat from phrases chosen by the participants. This year's theme was "In the Garden"

International Hot Glass Invitational '09

International Hot Glass Invitational '09

This was the first year for this unbelievable event, held at the Southpoint hotel Arena and boasting some of the world's greatest glassworkers. I was fortunate enough to attend, and witnessed the most mind-blowing feats of skill, guts, and sheer brilliance! The creativity I saw was indescribable! Everyone involved worked incredibly hard to make this event happen, and it was a huge success! I was unable to capture much of the action successfully, so be sure to check out the posts on glasspipes.org for better pictures of this event. Also, more information is available at internationalglassinvitatio...
Thank you to everyone who made this possible. I know this experience will inspire me and many others for years to come!

EGS flame-off 2008

EGS flame-off 2008

This year, Rose Winters(my cousin and glass partner)and I traveled together thanks to our parents- Mike, Audrey, Terry, and Diana Winters for getting our airline tickets. Also, many thanks to Glasscraft and Chameleon for our entry fees and supplies. And to T-bone for letting us use his car! And of course to Gabe and Fawn for their gracoius hospitality! It was Rose's first competition and she rocked! She took first in wearables and in team sculpture along with myself. It was a great weekend in which many beautiful works of art were created. Unfortunately, we had to miss Lee Fest, a music festival in honor of our friend Lee, who passed away last year. We made up for it my wearing shirts bearing his name while competing and I made a bead featuring mica from Yegge peak(where he once lived) and silver he gave me. Many thanks to all the volunteers and staff who made this great event happen. I will update this as soon as I can confirm things. My apologies to anyone if I messed up- let me know

Philly Female Flame-off 2007

Philly Female Flame-off 2007

Say that 10 times fast! Well, this year's event (the second annual) was held at Philly Glassworks, and was an amazing time! With more experience came a better organized event that went smoothly and was a total blast! There were more competitors and better prizes-and two full days of torch working. Thanks to Philly Glassworks and their amazing staff, all the girls, the sponsors, and everyone who came out to watch! And thank you Glasscraft, for sponsoring my trip. I can't wait for next year!- at Revere glass in Berkeley, CA.

2006 female flame-off-chicago

This was the first year for the event. Considering this, it went very well. There were a few mishaps, I suppose, but overall the event was excellent. I definitely had a lot of fun. I got to meet a ton of cool new people- not only all the girls competing, but also some people who came from far away just to watch! It was pretty amazing how much interest the event sparked. It was held at high end glass, a production shop., There was a singer at first, then dj's and cool graphics of us on a big screen. It was only for one day, and we later found out the winners by email and prizes were sent out.

2006 Eugene flame-off

2006 Eugene flame-off

Once again, I headed up to Eugene to compete. This time, I had a bunch of new friends I couldn't wait to see. It was the most fun I'd had blowing glass so far. There were more participants and tons of beautiful glass again. One of the exciting events was the hammer smashing demo by Pakoh and Marbleslinger. I missed it-when I came back from lunch, everyone was gathered around and I had no idea what was going on. I just heard the crash and people's reactions. I still didn't really know what happened until I saw the pictures later on Chris Carlson's gallery. Check it out if you haven't- there are tons of good pictures from the event on his page. As for me, I competed in wearables and sculpture again. This time I won first prize for sculpture, and nothing for my pendant. The prizes were even better this year-I got hooked up!!

2005 eugene flame-off

2005 eugene flame-off

This year I competed in both sculpture and wearables, and stayed the duration of the event. It was even better than the last year because I actually got to meet everyone and enjoy everything. I ended up getting first for wearables again, and my sculpture cracked, but was pretty cool. Again, there was a ton of beautiful work created, and I had an awesome time! Most people know by now the controversy about the giant pipe Hamm made on the lathe-it was incredible!! Unfortunately, he was disqualified from the competition.

2004 Eugene Flame-off

2004 Eugene Flame-off

This was the very first glass event I attended, and was talked into competing. I was very nervous,(especially having to work right next to the legendary Bob Snodgrass!) but I ended up with first place in the wearables category-winning a phantom. That was a HUGE change in my glassblowing-having a Nortel before the competition. I was very inspired by the awesome work I saw being made. All the people were very helpful and kind, making it one of the best experiences in my glass career! I apologize for this gallery being so incomplete-I was only there for one day, so I missed a lot of awesome work and the judging as well.

I have been working with glass since 1998, when I happened to get a job at Glasscraft following my new found interest in making glass beads. I started doing production full time in 2001, having picked up as much information as I could from random blowers and Glasscraft employees- and of course, Homer Hoyt. Today I find time to make art in between my huge production orders. I am looking forward to using my skills in different media to combine with glass for hopefully more expressive work. I am inspired by the awesome works of artists, including the glass artists on this site; as well as beauty I find in nature and in music.
