Hour Glass Chandelier

Hour Glass Chandelier

Posted by Andrew Brott on 2/26/2007
I just completed this U.L. listed Blown Glass Sculpture for a private residence in Minnesota. This is the first posting of the 5 new Chandeliers we just completed this past January 07. Many thanks to James (Jimmy) Ronner for all of his hard work!!!! He not only constructed all 5 metal frames (I helped a little), but his design input and glass blowing assistance helped make this happen. This, as with all of my work has been Copywritten and may NOT be reproduced in any fashion without my express written consent.

Hour Glass at night
My Original designs (see the drawings) called called for a second light source at the top of the fixture, It was Jimmy's idea to take advantage of the reflected ceiling light.

Steel frame before plating.
The frame is made from copper plated mild steel, this is the frame prior to it's finish. This Chandelier is part of my "Satsuma Basket" series. The title is derived from the "Hour Glass" shape found in the side elevation.

Finished frame.
My good friend John Schor, used to build and U.L. list most of my Chandelier frames. Sadly post huricanes, John has closed shop and moved to China. Brottworks LLC purchased our own U.L. file, testing equipment, and TIG welder We built these ourselves.

The real test...
As with all of my lit sculptures I personally install (a lisenced electrician does the junction box wiring) , I hung my 168lb fat ass from the mounting plate or asscusion and bounced a few times to be sure it was safe to hang the 74.5lb fixture.

The glass balls are a mixture of earth toned reds, yellows, and orange. The outer skin of each ball was rolled through a reducing powder and "crackled" by quenching in water when blown. They were also given an irridescent finnish to reflect light as se

Lower Dome
I used my "rake and trail" technique with reduction powders and frits. It's rubberized on the inside with 50 year silicone for extra safety. The clients have 3 kids; they can break it, but it won't fall off it's center mounting post.

All of my work deals with the "Living Aesthetic" which governs design. It's based on the principle that form follows function.

The designs in my Satsuma Series are based on the research of baskets, but also governed by the engineering required to change a bulb, and be to code. I still strive to make sculpture from traditional craft. Will post the 4 larger Chandeliers soon. AB
