Stolen!!

Stolen!!

This piece was stolen from Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao, Hawaii in late February. It was about 12 inches tall, hanging in an alcove and slightly fragile. The thief was quite bold. Im glad someone liked it just not that much.

Kamehameha Mint (Stenogyne kamehamehae)

Kamehameha Mint (Stenogyne kamehamehae)

Endemic to the rainforests of Maui & Moloka'i Stenogyne kamehamehae is "mintless" Hawaiian mint. The strong smell in mint is a deterrent to insects. This mint evolved without a predator and so lost its smell and gained large tubular flowers that birds pollinate.

Kalo

Kalo

Kalo or Taro was the staple food crop of Hawaii and many other indeginous cultures.

I've been working on this one for a long while now, Finally came up with a base that accents the kalo. I took a class on glass casting and the base was the result of my first project. The leaves are a mix of clear boro, moss, forrest green and have been sandblasted, the corm is aurora powder over clear boro and the base is made from cast bullseye glass.

'Akohekohe (Palmeria dolei) on 'Ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha)

'Akohekohe (Palmeria dolei) on 'Ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha)

The endangered 'Akohekohe or Crested Honeycreeper was once found on Molokai as well but today is only found in the remote rainforests of East Maui. Its white headcrest is the perfect pollinator for the 'Ohi'a lehua, hawaii's dominant native rainforest tree.
Someday I would love to see one, i believe they are down to around 1200 birds left and only live in extremely thick forest where access is restricted. There is some info at this link if yr. interested.

YOU ARE A TRUE WARRIOR OF THE FIRE !!!!!!
Your works and technical precision are
immensely inspiring. I look forward to
seeing you ascend to furthur levels of
greatness, thought unobtainable before
having attempted what was once thought
to be out of reach or impossible.
We have much in common, though I aspire
to yet reach your skill level.
Remember, you have to break a few eggs
to make an omlette! much respect-ODS NTT
