NEW TOOL_ "VIN PIN"

  « John "VinE" Vinson

(Glass Art Tips & How-To's)

NEW TOOL_ "VIN PIN" I have been using flower frogs for years to put neat imploded designs in glass. The only problem with using the flower frogs was that they were almost always made with a lead base. When I first started using flower frogs with lead bases I ran into several problems: The glass tended to stick into the frogs i was using . Also the heat would transfer from the glass, through the brass pins, and melt the lead base. After reading about the effects of lead inhalation I decided I needed to figure out a way to make a flower frog that the beginner glass artist could use. I tried using welded stainless steel ones, but the pins that came with those were too small and stuck to the glass easily. After putting the project on the backburner a few months i finally found a graphite machining company that was willing to help me develop a prototype model: Weaver Industries: I highly recommend them to anyone who needs anything graphite!

*Update: the vin-pin is now available worldwide on e-bay.

apply color...I used northstar amber purple for this demo. If you use colors with silver in them you will get some nice striking effects!

with a little practice you should be able to get the clear to encase over the colored glass . This demo is one of many ways to utilize the VIN PIN. I will be posting more photos/demos sometime in the near future.

i melted wax into the frog so that after a few meltings the bottom had a 1/4 inch layer of wax to protect the lead...

yea I did the wax thing too.
it worked ok. But the graphite is better because you can take the pins out to create different designs

now that's a good idea!
your graphite idea is a good one! but how does it work to rearrange the placement of the pin design?

it works great for making designs
The pins slide in and out easily. The graphite that Weaver Industries machined it from is high quality too. I think you would have to change the pins out several hundred times before it started to break down. I have made a couple of marbles with different designs using the vin-pin. maltese cross/heart/peace sign/ star....I will post some pics soon...

p.s.
The vin-pin will be available through major distributers sometime in the near future. Until they can be purchased through my e-bay. store . id : DVINE-GLASS

Thanks for the comment
I'm really interested in your "Vin-Pin" at some point I would like to aquire one. YOur work looks excellent, keep it up. So are you blowing glass in 30 degree weather all year? It has been chilly down here in Santa Cruz, I can't wait til the temp rises at least a little bit.
Again thanks for your comment, much appreciated.
Peace-
