Temporary easel

Posted by Andrew Brott on 10/23/2006
Sometimes I use this site as to host images for clients and collectors...
If the easel will not work, I have come up with another solution...
Many Thanks to Glass Artist and Technician Jason Grodsky from Urban Glass. This piece is to premier this Wednesday in at a Gala in NYC.

Jason, I used the following:
A screw gun/cordless drill with a Phillips head driver, A pencil/sharpie pen, two pairs of pliers (to open chain links), heavy duty felt (see photos), a scissors or razor blade to cut the felt, 16" of "piano hinge" (you may need to use a "C" Clamp and hand held metal hack saw if forced to cut it), 3/4" long flat head wood screws that fit the piano hinge, and a piece of 3/4 "Luan" or nice veneered (Birch?) plywood 18" wide x 54" long, and metal chain cut to length.

Images
Jason: use what I show/describe to your best abilities; you were hired because of your experience/b... I trust your judgment, if you take a different rout to the same results, so be it. But if you feel uncomfortable, remember I arrive in NYC on Wed.

Remove from crate, and put felt on the bottom
Find the bottom of the piece (look for my signature), be careful it weighs 110 lb. Try NOT to lay it flat, or squeeze the glass hard between the wood; work with the piece upright but be VERY careful of chipping the polished edges on the floor.

1 3/4" felt strip goes on the bottom
Use a razor, scissors, or knife to cut two felt strips and place on the bottom to protect the glass from the floor.

Safely face the back of the piece towards you
you will fit the 18"x54" wood strip between the wall mounting cable posts, and on top of the cable.

Piano hinge
This can be longer than 18" (if it sticks over so what?) , but no shorter than 12". Notice how it placed onto the wood strip. I used the 3/4" wood screws, but BE SURE THEY ARE NOT LONGER THAN THE 3/4" luan.

Not too tight
You will need to unscrew these later, so these are just pilot holes to be used again later.

More pilot holes
I used 3/4" wood screws to self tap more pilot holes into the base wood of the glass casting , and removed the hinge to expose the holes

The fun part...
I then re-installed the piano hinge permanently into the wood strip. Have the screw gun close by and hold the strip to the base holes and permanently screw the two together.
