(Fused / Slumped / Kiln Formed Glass Art)

Chimo I recently (August 06) made this mixed media glass sculpture. The kiln cast glass sails were slumped by firing stainless steel cables into the glass, then firing them onto a steel frame. I was having a hard time trying to fit the stainless between the glass sail layers, and make it stay in place. Jimmy suggested I use Elmer’s Glue; which I added hydrated alumina and silica flour to.

Mast and base

The metal mast is 1/4" round stock mild steel. The bottom was threaded and run through a granite base, and fastened with nuts and washers. The finish is copper foil, covered in lead and tin solder, and copper plated with CuSo4- i.e. copper sulfate.

This illustrates what happens when a sail breaks... It's still held together by the stainless steel cable. Many thanks to James Ronner, we learned a bunch from this project....
