Day Effect - The Ortigas Horse

(Neon Glass Art)

Day Effect - The Ortigas Horse Late in 2001, we received a commission from Ortigas and Company, the owners of the Ortigas Center in San Juan, Metro Manila, to sculpt a huge (16.5 feet tall by 34 feet long by 4.5 feet wide HORSE, in NEON) The commercial section of the Center is the Greenhills Shopping Center Complex (a 25 hectare shopping mall area). To celebrate the coming of the Year of the Horse in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, Ortigas's President, Attorney Rafael Ortigas, decided to pay tribute to the Chinese community by commissioning the work.
Since we obviously could not execute the work solely of neon tubes, we had to fabricate a metal base, which used 2" welded nesh, 2" flat bars, and sheet metal, to mount the neon standoff insulators. The sculpture was then painted in White (mane and tail) and Gold (the rest of the body) to present a pleasing aesthetic "Day Effect" The neon 15KV transformers were incorporated into the frame, and received the same paint treatment. The neon treatment was originally supposed to be a basic silhouette (the pattern we showed them was a 2 dinensional sculpture mounted on a 2X3 foot painting frame with a black felt background) double sided, so it could be viewed from either side of their huge main sign for the complex.
When we completed the figure, we found that due to its length, the head and tail of the horse lifted while the rest of the body stayed on the ground. it was like lifting a fish by raising the head and tail sections. That was how we DISCOVERED the secret of the 3 Dimensional Neon Sculpture, that we had never seen in any of the available neon books. To stiffen our structure, we layered (on both sides) two more layers of welded mesh from the basic 2" apart double layer of welded mesh. The first layer at 1ft and the second layer at around 10in from the second layer. We shaped the stiffening layers like muscles, and after cross bracing them every 2-4 in apart at a 45 deg angle, they REALLY gave the impression of being muscles.
We then (after tracing the basic figure in silhouette)continued to trace the muscle patterns with additional neon tubes, lifting them almost 2ft total from the base figure. As the figure was see-through you could then see a total of 5 tubes layered on either side of the figure.
due to the brillance of the light the effect was literally NEON MAGIC! It looked like there was this Magical Horse in gold and white tubes, taking a walk under the Main Greenhills Shopping Center sign.
We offer as our first image the "Day Effect" of this sculpture. Observe the muscle effect of the layering, the transformers built into the frame, and most of all...note that even in this midday shot, YOU CANNOT SEE HOW THE SCULPTURE HANGS FROM THE BASE OF THE MAIN SIGN! As an afficionado of magic, we decided to illustrate that indeed, NEON is a MAGICAL MEDIUM!
We see this as our contribution to all our colleagues involved in NEON, be they using neon as a medium for commercial applications as well as a medium for artistic expression.
If there is anyone who feels we could be of assistance to them in any way regarding how we managed to come up with this NEW TECHNIQUE,kindly feel free to contact us and we would be happy to share ALL our knowledge and experience with you. I turned 60 this year and have no one to pass my knowledge and experiences to, as my son, Inaki, does not seem inclined to follow in my footsteps.
Although I have never seen a single piece of Neon work from the Philippines included in any of the books on neon published, just want you all to know, that Neon is ALIVE and WELL, in the Republic of the Philippines.
