Well, recent events made me sit back and ponder my current works and how to branch off in a different direction. It was like a light bulb went off over my head as I was messing around on the torch making floral cane. Do scenic beads featuring geisha! So I flattened my glass into a tab shape to give me a canvas and began making geisha in more of a portrait format. Here are my first attempts at this new style. Oh and yes, I still will continue to make my classic geisha beads with the smiling eyes. I just needed to step out of my comfort zone for a bit. Hope you like them.

I think this was the 3rd one I made, the back is adorned with a cherry blossom tree to give a more dimensional look.

 |
This geisha is looking up and raising her arms, wanting the prettiest and biggest bloom. Still a bit out of reach isn't it?

A tiny geisha against a backdrop of flames with a lantern hanging above. The backside is etched.

|
I etched the back of the bead and used glue as a resist to form the word "geisha" in kanji, calligraphy style.

 |
I added a dime so you can get a better idea of the size.

Part of a small set I made in early November, this tab was made into a Christmas ornament that could double as a pendant.

One of my favorite color combos is pink and orange. Part of the set I made in early November 2006.

Next to a dime and ruler for size comparison. These tabs are all around in inch tall, Nov. 2006

This geisha has gold aventurine hairsticks & my favorite one from the set, Nov. 2006

I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon, thanks to my mother who is also an artist. It wasn't until I began working with hot glass May 2005 that something really sparked inside of me. As a self-taught glass artist, I hope my beads are just the beginning of a long and adventurous career into this astounding medium.

and self taght? some props and some crit.. for one year, that's really nice stuff. don't waste those hand skills, get some books and take some classes. you've heard of Loren Stump right? i'm only preaching when i see potential.
murrini would benifit these pieces extremely well, and bring them beyond usual flameworkie stuff.. you sit down when you work right?

Thanks Matthew!
Yeah, I've heard of Loren Stump and would like to take some classes. I just ordered a Lynx torch and would love to start doing murrini. Right now I stand while I work but hopefully by Fall I'll have a proper setup. I just checked out your gallery also- WOW! I love your little dogs. I appreciate your feedback Matthew, thank you. ~Tracy
