Self-taught, I began lampworking May of 2005 and up until June of 2008 created all my work on a HotHead torch. I'm now using a GTT Lynx and LOVE IT! While geisha are my signature beads, I also enjoy creating a variety of others... whatever pops into my head.

I'm going through my stash of lampwork beads and deciding which ones I'm willing to part with. Mosaics, stained glass and painting are taking up most of my time this year. ;) You can expect my lampwork designs back in full force next summer!

My third year of making special geisha for Halloween. 2008's theme is The Mummy. I created kimono to look like mummy wrappings, gave them hair inspired by Nefertiti and each one holds a handmade sterling ankh. I started out making 3 prototypes until I found the design I wanted and went on to make 5 for this year. Since they are part of my limited edition holiday series, this specific design will never be repeated. Only these 5 will ever exist and each comes with her own signed collector card.

Well at first I was going to call them Garden Globes, but then a woman who works here at the Armory said they reminded her of her grandmother's paperweight collection. I think "Paperweight Beads" will be the umbrella name and then I'll have different styles, like Garden Globes for the florals, etc. I was so happy that they brought back a treasured memory for her.

I love geisha! I began with tribal people, African American, Indian women wearing sari and geisha. I was trying to develop an individual style that really stood out as my own and began adding faces, inspired by my kokeshi doll. These also led to my sumo beads.

As the weather gets cooler my torchworking days draw to a close, the Hothead goes into hibernation until the Spring thaw... *sniffle* So here are some of my latest bead creations, I've been spending most of my time making beads instead of jewelry.

A mermaid based loosely on a painting I did about 4 years ago. In the painting, I have a mermaid with a black bottom half instead of the usual green/blue and her tail is flipping up behind her. So here's a mermaid with a black tail decorated with silver and reactive glass.

Starting in 2006 I began creating special limited edition holiday geisha for Halloween and Christmas. Last year was my candy corn geisha and this year the design is a witch geisha with a bubbling cauldron of green witch's brew. Only 2 were created this year and this specific design will never be recreated.

A design that came about by accident when I wound too much glass on the mandrel. Larger than my usual style.

I began making limited edition Christmas geisha last year. My collection for 2007 has the theme of the 3 Wise Men. Each one is carrying their special gift and I melted silver foil to create an evening sky full of stars on their kimono. The guiding Star of Bethlehem is represented by a cubic zirconia embedded into the front of each kimono. The brightest star among many.

I've now moved up to a Lynx torch from my HotHead and still trying to get acclimated to the extra heat. I'm getting the hang of it though and have begun making my geisha again.

Well, recent events made me sit back and ponder my current works and how to branch off in a different direction. It was like a light bulb went off over my head as I was messing around on the torch making floral cane. Do scenic beads featuring geisha! So I flattened my glass into a tab shape to give me a canvas and began making geisha in more of a portrait format. Here are my first attempts at this new style. Oh and yes, I still will continue to make my classic geisha beads with the smiling eyes. I just needed to step out of my comfort zone for a bit. Hope you like them.

A design well suited for jewelry is my 2 piece geisha. The body is streamlined and made into either a cone or what I think of as vase shapes.

I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon, thanks to my mother who is also an artist. It wasn't until I began working with hot glass May 2005 that something really sparked inside of me. As a self-taught glass artist, I hope my beads are just the beginning of a long and adventurous career into this astounding medium.
