Josh Opdenaker’s glass work ranges from the absurd to the edgy and aggressive. In his own words he describes, “the beauty of glass sculpting to be the never ending struggle for perfection in theory and in execution. The art is not in the finished piece; the art is in the physical movement of creating the work.” His innovative techniques and concepts leave much contemplation and introspection and never gets stale by constantly changing subject matter. With such a range of style his work is impossible to generalize or classify, leaving it much in a class of it’s own. Josh states, “If nothing else, view my work as original. Technique and craft can be learned, originality cannot. You either have it, or you do not.”

This body of work by Joshua Opdenaker is described as sophisticated edgy. Some of the pieces like the needle and oxygen mask provoke an aggressive sensation. Although some works are more intimidating than others, all emit a sterile and medical feel. While these items’ intended use is to heal people, they present a high contrast by equally making people feel uncomfortable.

Trophies for Manhattan Golf Classic held on October 23, 2006. Both are donations and both were lampworked then carved and etched. The clubs are life size and can be removed from the stands. The stands were donated as well as the The Manhattan Golf Classic stencil, donated by Alan Jacobson of AGS Graphic Design. I really couldn't have made these sculptures without the much appreciated donations.

Starburst Chandelier and Sconce. The chandelier alone has 225 points assembled to a large welded steel frame. Around five feet tall, each point is sandblasted and hand oil painted. The sconce has twelve points created in the same style. Custom order that took twelve hours to assemble on-site. Thanks for looking, and more importantly thanks to the Bucci's for supporting this artist.

Custom made light-chandelier. Lampworked glass. 4x3.5x3.5 feet. The client was extremely trusting, considering I only gave her a scratchy, crudely drawn blueprint. The next light will be the same setup, only flipped to be a table-top lamp. Thanks for checking it out. jop

I cut apart a lowrider bicycle for this series. The chrome pieces really accent and highlight the qualities of the glass it is connected to. I feel bad for the bike, but it's all good because it was chopped in the name of art. Thanks for looking, josh
