I was contacted by a friend from undergrad in the late Spring of 2007 with the news that a third anniversary gift is traditionally glass and with a request for information about commissioning a window that was inspired by Japanese woodcut prints, if possibly in particular using Hokusai's "Great Swell at Kawangawa" as a jumping off point. Well it's taken me a good solid season but the window is finally finished and delivered, measuring a mere 18.5" x 14.5" (insanity) and perhaps looking a little too much like the original. Still.. I'm super happy with the results. The piece is entitled "Hokusai Study in Glass"
Please excuse my light table for its unevenness of the yellowish light and for the lack of photo taking space above it, resulting in lens distortions of straight lines.

A friend and exceptionally supportive customer of mine was looking to have a box crafted for his mom for Christmas 2007. I'm a little embarrassed to report it was finished in February 2008 (sigh). But it is done and delivered, it was fun to make and while it was kindof painful working with little glass pieces I do really enjoy meticulous detail in glass. The box is inspired by delft patterns on kitchenware. Enjoy.

Somehow I always get caught without enough glass when it comes time for holiday craft fairs.. and by always I mean the past two fairs I've done. A couple of friends and myself participated in the Plowshares Peace Festival put on by the Syracuse Peace Council. I had planned to have a whole lot more leaves, once again I'll say "next year.." We didn't do really well but we did passably, and we had a lot of fun. The leaves were drawn from pressed leaves I collected this season, the snowflakes were drawn from photos of the real thing.

This includes work I've done as a developing artist as well as some more recent pieces. All of the work is original, construction done with the copper foil method. I am still trying to get a studio set up in my home in Syracuse, NY; which is certainly not the cultural capitol of anything but I figure I should start out where the cost of living is such that a starving artist doesn't actually have to starve.

Hello, my name is Byron Norelius, and I've been working with stained glass for about 8 years. I am currently taking a long break from academic pursuits in conservation and environmental biology to attempt a simpler existence.. which I'm hoping to use my talents with glass to at least partially finance. My background in the natural sciences has greatly influenced my style and subject matter, both of which are semi-reminiscent of the art nouveau movement with its use of natural motifs and curving lines. Comments, questions, and commission inquiries are welcome and appreciated. Thanks, and enjoy.
