These were the center pieces for the Liberty Musuem auction that took place in October of 2007. I would like to thank the musuem for giving me this opportunity for creating these 5 pieces. The musuem recently opened a room dedicated to DNA and the study of it. So i decided to do my iterpertation of the Fabric of Life.

This is an award that i made for the Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia. It is a sculpture of a diatom ,a diatom is a Microscopic silica organism that lives in water. There are millions of different species of this organism and this particular one is named after Ruth Patrick. Ruth just turned 100 years old on November 17,2007 and still works full time at the Museum . She actually discovered this one that i made.In her life time she has given many award for discovering the corallation between certain species and polluted and unpolluted waters. So certain species are markers for different types of pollutants. It was honor to make and here it is.Thanks Nate

The stems designs in this series of goblets were inspired by the ornamentation of medieval weaponry.
The red and blue deigns exude the pride of medeival hiearchy, and significance of noblemen in medeival times. The orange and blue piece has afree spinning marble in the middle of the design.
Each piece stands 15 to 17 inches tall.
Thanks for looking.Sincerely, Nate Purcell

THE HISTORY OF THE AMAZING SCARAB BEETLES
Scarab Beetles can be found in South America and Egypt. The dung beetle fossils date back 40 million years. The Egyptians immortalized the scarab beetle as sacred . The Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle represented their sun god, Ra. Ra was the Egyptian god who rolled the sun across the sky and buried it each night. The scarab beetle became so sacred that they were put on unique stones to wear as jewelry. Archaeologists have also uncovered some evidence that Indians tribes_in South America also viewed the scarab beetle_as a religious symbol.
Ancient amulets were used for the deceased and the living. Amulets were believed to endow the wearer with the characteristics depicted in the art. Scarab beetle amulets portrayed the beetle's persistence in rolling a dung ball and the reemergence of the beetle from its hole in the ground. The scarab beetle became the symbol of spontaneous generation, new life, and resurrection.

This is a piece that i collaborated whith my friend Ryan McLoughlin on located in East falls PA.we asked to part of a nature based show.Everything in the gallery was either made with plant material or made to represent nature. I was asked to make nests and eggs .So we decided to take trees and cut them in half and do an installation with wood and glass . The effect was realistic and very fragile with full of life. the nest were made by taking chocolate glassand stretching down to stringers and then sluping them in a mold in the kiln. The eggs are just flameworked and just placed loose in the nest. Thanks for lookin NATE

This is another take on combining glass with leather, silkthread, and glass. Each disk is actually three disks fused together by bridges that basically make a triangle. Then each seperate set of disks is woven together to create a glass texlile that conforms around the body. This is a very sexy piece.thanks for lookin...nate

Well- I started blowing glass in 1998 with Sean Stirling(Smiley) in Boulder Colorado. After being really poor in CO. I decided to move back to Philly.I guess I just missed the city life and I was tired of not being able to eat after 10 at night. The first couple of years in Philly were pretty rough but I ran in to some good people and shit started poppin' off.One thing led to another and I built Philly Glass Works. So with having focus for 7 and half years shit finally worked out.I would like to say thanks to -first and foremost- Smiley for teaching me in the begining and All the other glass blowerers in Philly that helped me out too ....Peace...(I'm focused man!)

Feelin' Your Work!
Everything is tight! Great concepts, solid techniques. I guess I need to get my ass down to Philly Glass Works. For real! I'm actually new to this glass game and am very interested in developing the little skills I have. I've never been down with blowing..., but if it results in works of art like this... I'll try anything once. Look forward to seeing/meeting you at PGW. Holla back! Peace.

Hey man, I was wondering if you ever finished that piece from that workshop a few months ago. It was pretty sweet looking when you were working on it, coil pots, incased, blown out again, then you were making it into that cone shape, hope that sparks your memory. I would love to see how that turned out. Hit me up if you ever finished that up. Thanks man take it easy
