Phil and Veda are both self-taught artists who were drawn to the medium of glass for artistic expression at a young age. The parents of two lovely daughters, Phil and Veda met in California where they were separately exploring and studying craft, Phil specializing in glassblowing. This shared passion for art and craft has fused both their personal and artistic union and sustains the Bickley family. They work independently, but also encourage each others unique voice and vision in collaborative projects. Veda's glass takes on whimsical, fluid and sensual lines while Phil's work is always confident and rich in sophisticated expression. Having worked and supported themselves as artists for more than six years, their ability to live a life fostered by their art resonates in their pieces. Their home in the graceful rusticity of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains is also their artist's studio, so creativity is deeply etched in their everyday life.

I love the idea of wearable sculpture. I have fun making these. It always gives me a chance to play with color combos. Made by Veda.

This is another of our new bird series. It is similar to the last black bird with some subtle differences. We will be posting more soon as they are created.

I took this lamp shade to AGI with the idea of creating something fabulous for my moms 50th birthday. The end result was greater than I could have imagined. Tom and Elaine have created an exceptional opportunity for lampworkers to come together with the common goal of teaching and learning. In addition to the glass info, Big Don and Randy shared their blacksmithing skills with any one who was interested. Special thanks to everyone for making this project come together. Phil

I am really starting to get a feel for the birds now. They have been a super fun thing to work on. They are bringing me out of a sort of rut. The bottle on this one is truly exquisite.I wish I had some better close ups of it.Thanks to my lovely husband for keeping me going with his support and good example. His skillfull workmanship is an inspiration.

These are some "ancient" pieces going back about 10 years. The genie was made 3 years ago and is a collaboration between Phil&Veda Bickley and Ethan Murray(another Western NC flameworker). It was a fun project that took 2 relaxed days. It is 10 inches long and 7 inches tall. all boro NO GLUE!!!

Kudos to those who can make faces. They are HARD. These are really rough and need alot more refinement but its a fun new direction to go. These were inspired by the wonderful Inuit ivory face carvings I've seen recently. Thanks for looking and any pointers would be VERY welcome.
