Hello,
My name is Tim Priest and I just joined your group. Thank you for the invitation. I began full time hot glass work in 1986 through 2001 when I took time off due to heavy metal poisoning. I drove truck for a year and a half and of course spent all my money to build the sweetest little glass shop in Kentucky. I reopened summer of 2003. My former skills are returning slowly but surely.
When I reopened, I decided to ad the internet as a part of my business. I have found that the web sight has been far more challenging than I could have known.

Yes I had moderately high levels in many metals that are used in glass work but the real surprise came when the report showed high levels of lead, antimony and cadmium. To my knowledge these metals are not used in glass work. I traced the color back to there sources and all of my suppliers said that these metals were not in there glass but then latter admitted that they get there supplies overseas and are not 100% sure themselves. I traced the mystery back to burners and burner decay . What I do know is that you do not want metals in your system and do everything to insure excessive ventilation. Track the smoke off of a cigarette to make sure you are getting clean air.

I have experienced the headaches and shortness of breath before, but how much is too much? I took a class this weekend, and they claimed to have adequate ventilation, but I still left there with a screaming headache.Plus, not a lot of care was taken when fuming silver and gold. They said it was carcinogenic, and that was the extent of their instruction about that. I liked the class and the people running it, so I'd like to find out more about this very important issue, so we all can work safer and live long healthy lives.I intend to let them know anything I find out for future classes. Thank you all so much, Fred Rossi.
