I learned my basic glass handling skills using a mapp gas torch and 104 coe rods. I assume you're set up similarly. I had the same problem with my clear. I eventually acquired everything I needed to work with boro, and never had that problem again. Recently I met a woman that works with soft glass and asked her how she kept her clarity with her clear. She told me she had to buy the most expensive stuff available, and even then didn't get constant results. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.

The problem is unfortunately the torch itself. Moretti (effetre) tends to pick up carbon from the flame if you use a fuel rich mixture. Venturi burners like the hothead always have more carbon in the flame than mixed fuel torches. If you want to avoid that you will need to eventually switch to an oxy/propane or oxy/natural gas torch. You can get a GTT Cricket, or a Nortel Minor burner for about $140, and those will be plenty for making most beads.
