Can someone tell me what cold working is? I have been working with glass etching here: http://www.glassetchingsecrets.com , and am trying to extend my knowledge of other glass arts. So sorry if this a dumb question.

cold working is the act of working the glass cold, after or before heating or annealing. There is not one meaning of the word. Some cold working tecniques include sandblasting, grinding, polishing, carving, gluing, lamenating, etching etc. Graal and cameo are popular techniques which involves overlayering colors on a blank, then annealing. Once cold, then removing layers in a pattern to reveal the underlying colors which can create detailed pictures. The piece can be reheated and worked further once the coldworking has taken place to polish or manipulate even further.
this is a good resource for coldworking equipment: http://www.hisglassworks.com/
here are examples of possibilities: cameo:

hope this helps

Cold working as Kevin said above, is the process of sorting and partially melting or annealing these pieces into patterns which are then worked into a finished product. Master Gianluca Vidal is one such exponent of this type of work turning out signed studio art glass vases on incredible beauty. Master Mario Gambaro is yet another exponent of the art with pieces of equal beauty.
Have a great day
